iso.jpgMT Waste Management has become the first waste management company in the Milton Keynes area to be accredited with ISO14001, the environmental quality standard, by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance. ISO14001 compliance requires procedures to be in place to ensure that the company operates in an environmentally-sustainable way to help it reduce its carbon footprint. The award, presented on 21st May 2008, sets the company apart from its competition and positions it as a beacon of excellence within its own industry.

The company was formed in 1998 to provide companies with waste management services that reduce cost, improve efficiency, ensure that the company complies with current legislation and is operated in an environmentally friendly way. By achieving ISO14001 itself, the company has proved that it practices what it preaches.

The ISO14001 quality standard touches every aspect of the day-to-day operation of the organisation. The new Continual Service Improvement Plan (C-SIP) control system is an integrated management tool to ensure that the company is operated in the most environmentally efficient way. Paper waste, for example, is separated into dedicated bins, the volume of recyclable and non-recyclable materials recorded, and the staff encouraged to maximise the recyclable element. All chemicals used on the premises are identified, have detailed data sheets on file and a strict process established to deal with spillages, should they occur. The use of electricity, gas and water is recorded accurately as part of the company’s aim to reduce consumption to a minimum. All company vehicles now run on diesel fuel.

The company has also launched an e-mail newsletter to help advise its customers on environmentally-sustainable practices and provide special offers and discounts when available on environmental products, as well as advising on changes in regulations.

Achieving ISO14001 has been a milestone for the company and, according to Mark Tatum, its managing director, has multiple benefits. “It makes us focus on reducing our impact on the environment; helps us keep our own costs under control; and demonstrates to our clients that we are serious about what we do,” he said.

Mark Tatum also explained that ISO14001 was critical to his company’s development as it was now regularly identified on tender documents for large contracts. “Many of our customers are large organisations who take their responsibilities to the environment seriously. By achieving ISO14001 we can demonstrate that we are as dedicated to protecting our environment as they are themselves.”

MT Waste Management provides a wide range of waste services across industry. Services include: the supply of balers and compactors; the recycling of cardboard, cans, plastic containers, batteries, fluorescent tubing, metals and furniture; the legal and sustainable disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment; hazardous waste disposal; and complete facilities management programmes.

The ISO14001 certificate was presented to MT Waste Management by Joanne Souter from LRQA at a ceremony held at the company’s headquarters in Milton Keynes.
