linpacs-pushback.jpgL’Oréal’s new Luxury Products Division (LPD) distribution centre in Sherwood Park, Nottingham is an impressive building of over 10,000m2 as befits the world’s leading cosmetics company. Purpose built to store the company’s luxury products including Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, Cacharel and Lancôme, the facility distributes to customers throughout the UK and Ireland. The distribution centre has been fitted out with a storage solution of both pushback racking and carton live shelving from LINPAC Storage Systems. James Warren, warehouse flows manager for L’Oréal’s luxury products, was a member of the team that selected LINPAC from a competitive tender of suppliers.

He explains the reason that L’Oréal chose to install the pushback racking option, “We were looking for the storage density of drive-in combined with the flexibility and speed of pushback, operating at one load face.

“The pushback racking from LINPAC Storage Systems provides excellent storage density for our point of sale products and gifts with purchases. These items tend to be delivered in one big hit – up to 200 pallets at a time, and sent out again in the same way.”

Storing pallets up to four levels high, the pushback racking is ideal for this type of bulk storage and handling, accommodating a depth of up to five pallet loads in each lane.

For some customers L’Oréal delivers direct to stores, and the detailed picking of single items for order assembly is done from LINPAC’s carton live shelving. Providing constant replenishment to the pick face by a series of gravity tracks, the shelving helps to ensure that picking is completed in the most efficient way. This is done by minimising the physical activity required to finish each pick, saving time and increasing accuracy.

Each bay of carton live shelving in the distribution centre is fitted with wheels, making the bays independent and easy to move. James Warren again, “The advantage of this type of shelving is that it allows flexibility for a changing business environment, as the business grows it is a simple procedure to re-profile this section of our distribution centre.”

L’Oréal has been present in the UK for over 75 years, and today 67% of British women use one or more of the company’s products.
