ded_797.jpgWhen Dan Hughes, an aircraft technician from Barry in South Wales, purchased a pair of Redhawk Super Work Trousers in 2007, he was not to know that a year later they would save him from serious injury. Earlier this year, while working on his girlfriend’s car, Dan was using an angle grinder to grind away a bolt housing to facilitate the removal of a rotating bolt. Without warning the angle grinder kicked viciously, slipped from his grasp, hit the ground and, with the grinder locked in operation mode, ran up his right leg and into his shin.

Fortunately, the fabric of the Redhawk Super Work Trousers that Dan was wearing wrapped around the disc and spindle, stalling the grinder. Despite being in a lot of pain Dan managed to extricate himself from the grinder and bleeding profusely, made it to his neighbour’s house where he collapsed. The neighbour rushed Dan to the A and E department of Barry Hospital, where a doctor removed shards of disc from the wound before having the leg x-rayed.

Concerned by the possibility of serious muscle and tendon damage, the doctor transferred Dan to the University of Wales Hospital in Cardiff. Following further examinations it was discovered that no tendons had been severed, but there was a cut to the extensor muscle. Although at present Dan is unable to move his foot in any direction, he is expected to make a full recovery.

“Even though I’m temporarily incapacitated, I feel very lucky,” says Dan. “The doctor told me that if it hadn’t been for the robust construction of my work trousers, the injury might have been so much worse and could have resulted in permanent disability.”

Leading workwear manufacturer Dickies make the Redhawk Super Work Trousers that Dan was wearing when he had his freak accident.

Dickies’ Sales and Marketing Director Maurice Morton said: “We’re pleased Dan is well on the road to recovery. Although Redhawk Super Work Trousers are not designed to protect against extreme hazards, Dan’s accident does highlight the strength of Dickies’ workwear. It also emphasises the importance of taking care when using power tools.”
