Not quite a ‘genie in a lamp’ but Stanley Handling is helping change the light bulbs in some unusual locations. If you have ever visited a church or cathedral, gazed up at the ceiling and wondered how on earth the maintenance staff get up there, the answer is that they may well be getting a Genie to do it. Access platform distributor, Working at Height, recently supplied Genie AWP Super Series portable work platforms to both Westminster and Rochester Cathedrals to enable maintenance personnel to change light bulbs in these tall and awkwardly shaped edifices, much as in a warehouse or other high-ceilinged industrial building.
Unlike factories and warehouses however, cathedrals do not have flat floors and ceilings and moving the units easily around the sites was clearly going to present problems. The company teamed up with safety handling specialists Stanley Handling who provided their heavy duty PowerMate M2B powered stairclimbers and these were supplied with the portable work platforms as a total package.
PowerMate has enabled staff to manoeuvre the platform units – which can weigh in excess of 350kgs – anywhere in and around the cathedral with minimal manual handling effort and in complete safety. Thresholds, steps, narrow passages and even low archways can be negotiated thanks to the versatility and functionality of the PowerMate.
In fact the combined units were ‘factory tested’ using wooden frames set at the same dimensions as the tightest spaces in which they would need to operate to confirm their suitability.
