davicon.jpgDavicon, the UK’s leading mezzanine floor manufacturer, has just completed a thorough review of the major areas of its business as part of its commitment to continual improvement. Three separate but linked Kaizen events have been held focussing on Sales, Projects and Manufacturing processes. Manufacturing manager and Kaizen facilitator, Mick Hickinbottom says, “Davicon is committed to continual improvement and the Kaizen events form an integral part of achieving our objective of operational excellence.”

The focus of continual improvement is directed towards QCDSM that is quality, cost, design, safety and morale; all of which not only have a significant benefit to Davicon’s business and workforce but also to its customers.

Mick continues, “At the end of the day we are looking to eliminate waste and variation, build in quality where we are able to and improve the flow and pull of the business. To our customers this whole process translates into consistent product quality, competitive pricing and much improved lead times.”

The process mapping undertaken in the recent Kaizen events where aimed at improving the processes and eliminating waste, they involved a mix of employees from different areas of the business.

Mick says, “It wasn’t just sales people in the sales kaizen event, we brought in shop floor staff as well as designers and project managers so we could get a fresh and unbiased perspective. This has the added benefit of involving and giving employees an insight into other areas of the business that often have an impact on their own. Of course the event also includes the process ‘expert’ in effect the person who carries out the process day in day out. That way, there is not only buy-in to the new process but more often than not, it is this expert that is the main catalyst in finding a much better way of doing things.”

Continual improvement is part of Davicon’s culture and believes it to be a key factor in keeping the company successful. Having looked hard at its process from enquiry to despatch there are lessons learned and actions implemented that will keep it ahead of it rivals.
