The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has acknowledged Briggs Equipment’s commitment to supporting the UK’s Armed Forces community with the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Silver Award.
The asset management and engineering services provider, which operates a specialist defence division, Briggs Defence, has also aligned its values with the Armed Forces Covenant.
Gary Clements, Strategic Development Director at Briggs Equipment, said: “We are extremely honoured to win the Silver Award. This recognition of our efforts is also most timely, since this year marks the 20th anniversary of our Defence Mechanical Handling Equipment (DMHE) contract with the MOD.
“Our business benefits enormously from the skills and strong work ethic instilled in service personnel, so although we already employ a large number of former members of the Armed Forces, we are always actively recruiting.”
The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme encompasses Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards and primarily recognises private sector support for ex-service personnel and reservists.
Companies that attain the Silver Award are required to employ at least one member of the Armed Forces community and demonstrate their willingness to tackle the issues that service personnel can face.
Businesses must communicate well, support their employees using established HR policies and procedures and be flexible when it comes to annual training commitments and the mobilisation of reservists. They are also expected to show a willingness to employ cadet instructors, Armed Forces veterans and military spouses/partners.
The Silver Award is further recognition of Briggs Equipment’s commitment to making a difference to the lives of current and former members of the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force. Earlier this year it signed the Armed Forces Covenant, pledging to treat service personnel and their families fairly and with respect and, when appropriate, to show them special consideration.
