With UK vacancies increasing and Brexit looming, the transport and logistics sectors could be left with a skills and labour shortage, warns Lis Wilson, Director at online recruitment specialists Flat Fee Recruiter.

According to Adzuna, the total number of UK vacancies is increasing by 0.9% per year. Whilst this is good for job seekers, says Wilson, it’s not great news for businesses who are trying to recruit the highest quality workers from a potentially dwindling pool, as could be the case post-Brexit.

So what can employers do to ensure they get the highest number of quality applicants? As a business you need to get ahead of the game, advises Wilson; First, look at your corporate image – are you recognised as a good company to work for? The transport and logistics sectors already suffer from a bit of an image problem and are not seen as particularly attractive by many job seekers, so as a business you need to stand out from the rest and become the employer of choice both within the sector and your local area. Look after your staff to make sure you have the best employer brand and then promote yourself.

Have a solid recruitment strategy with a good mix of tools like direct advertising, referrals and social media. Also make sure your recruitment process is slick, continues Wilson, so that potential applicants know what to expect and are kept well informed throughout. You also need to understand how job seekers look and apply for jobs: ask your staff; make your website mobile friendly and don’t expect applicants to fill in lengthy application forms, as this is a huge put-off!

Make sure your job advert sells your company, it may sound obvious, says Wilson, but use key words and the correct job titles to attract the right people. And most importantly get your job adverts in front of as many relevant people as possible.
