Welcome to the June 15th edition of Warehouse & Logistics News. As this month’s EU referendum approaches, one thing is certain – whatever happens in the vote, the UK will still go on trading with the rest of the world and the warehousing and logistics industry will go on delivering the goods.

As reported on our front page, loading bay specialists sara LBS have been working with Coombe Fisheries, a leading South West of England seafood processor, which has successfully obtained an EU grant and invested in a loading pod from sara LBS as part of a refurbishment of its facilities. Hopefully similar funding will still be forthcoming in future to help British companies expand and grow. Also in this issue we have the results of the IFoY Awards presented at CeMAT, with BYD, Crown, Jungheinrich and SSI Schaefer collecting awards.

Congratulations all round! In BYD’s 80-volt lithium-ion stacker, the jury selected a Chinese-made vehicle as the world’s best forklift of the year for the first time. I went to China recently to visit BYD’s factory and was extremely impressed with the scale of their vision. We can expect much more to come from this innovative company.

Other suppliers making the headlines in our news pages include polymer safety barrier experts A-Safe, in the Sunday Times Export 100 for the second year and pallet wrap specialist Kite Packaging, which has launched its second graduate programme, fast tracking outstanding applicants into senior management.

This issue’s Cold Storage & Distribution feature (page 14-17) is very topical as the weather hots up and temperature control in the supply chain becomes even more important. You can read how warehouse truck specialists UniCarriers can help you design and calculate your cold store operation to deliver the highest output. We also have the story of Pallite’s new Insulated Pallet Box, originally developed to help a customer keep products going to the Middle East chilled in transit, and now available made to order.

Our Doors & Curtains feature (page 20-21) has more smart thinking on show. Hörmann’s door systems reduce accidents and improve efficiency with proven measures such as traffic lights, key chutes and easy switching from manual to automation mode. And Efaflex’s high-speed warehouse doors solution for ceilings manufacturer Armstrong World Industries includes forkliftmounted transmitters so drivers can control the doors from their seats.

Finally, on the lighter side of the news don’t miss the tale of British Olympic ski jumper turned movie legend Eddie the Eagle swooping to open PHS Data Solutions’ new facility in Manchester (page 8.) Eddie has had his share of set backs, failures and public disaster, but his dogged persistence and good cheer in the face of difficulties are an inspiration to everyone in business. What a hero!
