Matt Barnes, 36, from Huddersfield, will oversee High Speed Door product improvement and new designs, including the development of large Fabric Engineering Solutions, which has been identified by Union as a product that is capable of achieving major growth in the coming years.

Like all new employees at Union, Matthew began his tenure with a several-week in-house training programme, which involves spending time with every department within the company and even included assisting Union’s engineers with installations; thus allowing him to gain an in-depth understanding of not just his role but also the unique culture the Employee Owned company has created.

Matt holds a range of academic qualifications including a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Design & Technology for which he studied at the Institute of Polymer Technology and Materials Engineering at Loughborough University. In addition, he has a vocational Design Diploma from Leeds College, and a Concurrent Engineering qualification in 3D Computer Aided Design for Manufacture utilising Inventor, Pro-Engineer and Pro-INTRALINK software.

Alongside his formal qualifications, Matt also has 14 years of ISO14000 engineering experience using 3D design software and has worked with major brands such as Bosch, Karcher, Stanley Tools, Hitachi and Nissan.

During his time with Glen Dimplex Home Appliances, Matt worked on a range of household products including Belling, Stoves & New World Appliances, Lec Refrigeration and Dimplex Heating.

Matt brings a wealth of engineering experience with him from previous employment including sheet steel and polymer design, manufacture and assembly. Matt’s research interests include further implementation of innovative sheet steel technology within the organisation. Over the course of his employment, he has held various positions within engineering, starting as a Junior Designer with Belling Appliances, to leading a team of Design Engineers as Head of Department.

Everyone in the team here – which is like a family really – has been super-supportive during my training period, for which I am extremely thankful. I have lots of ideas where small improvements in our already brilliant product range can make them even better, plus some thoughts on potential new products which will complement our current range. So watch this space!”
