The firm is continuing its sponsorship of a new Skillsbase Training Centre at Harpur Hill, which is operated by Buxton & Leek College and was opened by Transport Secretary, Patrick McLoughlin MP earlier this year.

At the centre Briggs Equipment helped to create a realistic warehouse environment by providing a multi-level racking solution complete with a Yale forklift, Hyster pedestrian pallet truck and several packing tables.

Now the latest cohort of students are benefitting from even more warehousing equipment from the company.

Dean Mansell, National Operations Manager at Briggs Equipment, explained: “Supporting the centre provides a fantastic opportunity for us to further strengthen our relationship with the college and university.

“It will help them in their efforts to raise the bar in the warehousing and logistics industry.

“Although this is one of the largest employment sectors, it still has sizeable challenges around recruitment and retention of quality employees.”

Facilities such as this offer a perfect opportunity for students to learn all aspects of the industry, both academic and practical, to help them gain employment and then develop a career in this dynamic sector.

Students at the centre study for Warehousing and storage NVQs levels one and two, combined with forklift truck driver training and a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC). The support of businesses such as Briggs Equipment enables them to learn in a realistic working environment, equipping them with the skills they will need in the future.

Len Tildsley, Principal of Buxton & Leek College, commented: “This is real-world learning; it takes the student out of the classroom and into an environment designed to mimic the best commercial and industrial workplaces”.

“By working with sector representatives we have been able to tailor the facilities and opportunities at the centre. This means we can provide what is needed to support core industries which are vital to business and economic growth.”
