Edward Hutchison, Managing Director of BITO Storage Solutions, reports on the growing popularity of BDC1 boxes within the fashion retail sector and how, when combined with boltless shelving, they can offer a flexible and space saving solution for fast and efficient order picking.

BITO-Boxes-1

BDC1 boxes have become de rigueur in the multichannel retail world – particularly in the fashion sector because they provide an ideal storage unit for packing clothes and garments and are particularly suitable for use as picking cartons.

BITO Storage Solutions has witnessed the recent growth in popularity of these boxes as we are providing shelving solutions to accommodate them for some of the UK’s leading high street and online retail names.

A big factor in the growing popularity of this storage unit has been the rapid growth in online fashion retail over recent years. According to the Office for National Statistics ONS released in August, in 2014, 74% of all adults bought goods or services online, up from 53% in 2008. Clothes (49%) were the most popular online purchase in 2014.

Multichannel retailers need to ensure that their order picking operations can pick large volumes of small orders quickly and efficiently to meet this demand as well as accommodate trends such as smaller and more frequent deliveries to stores; same day online delivery; click and collect; and later cut off times for ‘next day’ and ‘day 2’ delivery.

Generally manufactured from single wall rigid corrugated board, with a kraft paper outer, BDC1 boxes are formed from high quality, brown printed cardboard, making them suitable for storage, packaging and transportation. In addition, the cardboard packaging cartons and boxes are 100 per cent degradable and recyclable.

Standard BDC1 box dimensions are 610mm deep x 280mm high x 356mm wide as standard. This means that BITO’s standard 1300 mm wide boltless shelving bays will comfortably accommodate three BDC1 locations and provide a shelf capacity of up to 200 kg. This is a good size to keep individually wrapped items of apparel, shoes or accessories,

This is a great way to optimise space by reducing the number of uprights in a given run of shelving. If the shelving is incorporated into the ground level of picking bays within pallet racking, then two bays will comfortably fit between the uprights of a 2.7m bay.

These space saving solutions ultimately lead to fewer bays for the same amount of storage and provide an answer for locating more positions for SKUs on a pick face.

By combining the flexibility of BITO’s boltless shelving – which can be adjusted to meet a company’s changing needs and stock profiles – with the adaptability of the BDC1 boxes, fashion retailers and other companies can benefit from an extremely flexible storage and order picking system.

With its head office and main production facilities in Germany, BITO is an internationally operating manufacturer of storage and order picking systems. The company’s product range includes shelving and racking; storage and order picking systems; bins and containers and warehouse equipment and accessories.
