In our 1st September issue we reported that a forklift truck from a major manufacturer took part for the first time ever in the ceremony of Cart Marking in the Guildhall Yard on July 16. It now turns out to have been the second time this has happened.

Organised by the Worshipful Company of Carmen, the Cart Marking ceremony honours the age-old tradition of the guilds, in which branded vehicles are officially licensed to ply for trade in the City of London’s historic streets. Each year the Lord Mayor brands a colourful procession of commercial vehicles, including horse-drawn carts, steam-driven vehicles, veteran and vintage lorries plus modern trucks and tractor units, with a specific licence letter for the year.

Following publication of our article about a forklift truck debuting in this year’s Cart Marking, David M. Woods, Chief Executive of Acclaim Handling and a member of the Worshipful Company of Carmen, has written in to put the record straight.

David points out that he was granted the privilege of personally driving a 1951 vintage Coventry Climax petrol powered Forklift in the 2012 ceremony, and that event marked the first time that a forklift truck had been presented to the Lord Mayor for Cart Marking. Industrial equipment historians, please take note.
