auto-rfid-2Ford has extended its container management contract in Europe with CHEP, the global leader in pallet and container pooling services. The continuation of this partnership will see CHEP providing its reusable container and pallet services to Ford plants across Europe, including Turkey and Russia. CHEP will also continue to assist Ford in managing its own pool of folding large containers in the same region.

CHEP’s partnership with Ford has grown and developed to support the needs of Ford’s business across Europe, and the flow of components from North America. With CHEP’s containers being used in assembly, engine, power train, and stamping plants, the automotive supply chain is benefiting from the advantages that the outsourced, standardised container solution from CHEP delivers.

In addition to established equipment pooling expertise combined with exceptional customer service delivering value to the Ford business, CHEP will continue to introduce efficiencies through the use of best practice systems and tools such as SAP Managed Service, Six Sigma and RFID.

Rainer Sandow, Vice President, Automotive, CHEP Europe commented, “We are very pleased to be seen as a highly valued partner by Ford in Europe. In these challenging times for the automotive industry it is imperative that OEMs and suppliers drive cost out of their business and CHEP has been successful in helping Ford achieve this.”

The contract follows CHEP’s earlier announcement of an expansion of its activities in Turkey to support the growing automotive supply industry that manufactures parts for OEM and tier suppliers throughout Europe. In addition to Ford, CHEP’s current customers include Suzuki, Nissan, GM and Jaguar.

“Turkey is becoming an increasingly important player in the automotive industry,” added Rainer Sandow.

“We made the decision to expand our operation in Turkey because we are confident that Turkish companies in the automotive industry are looking to streamline their supply chain activities and we believe that CHEP is uniquely positioned to assist them.”

CHEP will provide reusable containers and pallets for the shipment of automotive components across the supply chain, thereby alleviating the need for these companies to purchase and maintain their own stock of equipment. For those companies currently using disposable packaging, the CHEP solution provides cost saving advantages, not only with respect to the packaging itself, but also through a reduction in product damage during transit and a reduced impact on the environment with the CHEP equipment being continually recycled.
