099_99Multimodal 2009, the UK’s premier transport and logistics event, which took place at the NEC Birmingham on 28-30 April, focused on supply chain efficiencies and the increasing importance of reducing transportation costs in the current economic climate.

Launched in 2008, the event in its second year recorded a 66% increase in visitor numbers with over 135 exhibitors in attendance.  With 3154 visitors  attending along with the increasing number of exhibitors this year it has been necessary to move to the larger capacity Hall 4 at the NEC Birmingham where Multimodal 2010 will take place on 27-29 April.

139_139While other UK materials handling shows face pressure from the recession, Multimodal goes from strength to strength, aided and abetted by Warehouse & Logistics News. As media partners for the 2009 show, WLN played a key role in helping get the message across about Multimodal being a must-see for industry professionals. Aidan O’Donovan, Marketing Manager at the exhibition’s organisers Clarion Events Limited, wrote to us afterwards: “ We wanted to say a big thank you for your involvement as a media partner at Multimodal. We were delighted with the increase in visitor numbers this year and hope to keep the momentum going for Multimodal 2010.”

The show was attended by high calibre industry executives from the transport and logistics sector as well as leading decision makers from key shippers operating throughout the UK.  Shippers in attendance included Sainsbury, 3m, Mars Chocolate, Panasonic, Argos, Homebase, Samsung Electronics, Toyota, Unilever, Jaguar Land Rover, Motorola, Whirlpool UK Ltd, Kraft Foods UK, BMW, Asda/Wall-Mart, Ford Motor Company and Rolls Royce.

143_143Multimodal 2009 was acclaimed by visitors and exhibitors alike and sets a new benchmark for the industry. Exhibitors also praised the very high quality of the attendees offering them opportunities for networking and meeting new customers. The high number of visitors and exhibitors proves the necessity for a UK focussed transport and logistics event bringing together key industry players.

Among the 135 plus exhibitors key participants included DSV, Wincanton, PD Ports, DB Schenker, LM Logistics and Ewals Cargo Care who were joined by many new exhibitors to the show in April.  Multimodal 2009 was supported by leading associations such as CILT, BIFA and the UKWA.

148_148Leading industry experts participated in the highly successful Shippers Voice Seminars.  Led by chairman Dr Andrew Traill, the seminars running over the three days of the show heard presentations and case studies from representatives of key organisations including the Port of Zebrugge, DP World Southampton, DSV, the European Shippers Council and Freight Transport Association. In addition one to one surgeries were available with all seminar speakers enhancing the visitor experience and knowledge gathering opportunities.  Elsewhere at the show the Elect Club VIP Dinner, stand parties & post event receptions provided excellent networking opportunities.

Event Director Robert Jervis commented “Multimodal provided a great opportunity for shippers to go shopping and find better ways of moving cargo and reduce their supply chain costs.” Over 45% of exhibitors have already re-booked for next year as well as several new organisations, highlighting the high quality and scope of the event going forward.
