jysk_1JYSK, a leading retailer of home furnishings, selected Caljan Rite-Hite’s ergonomic conveyor solution to empty sea containers at its 50 million cubic feet European storage and distribution facility. Telescopic boom conveyors, each fitted with a vacuum lifting aid, traverse between multiple doors enabling the operator to empty containers swiftly and ergonomically. Using this equipment means that a high level of activity can be maintained throughout the shift without compromising on employee welfare.

A container typically holds boxes of various shapes, sizes and weights representing various stock numbers. These are often pressed tightly together, making it difficult to get a grip on a single box. Caljan BeltTrack telescopic boom conveyor, fitted with Vaculex ParceLift™, is a compact solution developed specifically for unloading loose-loaded goods in a confined space, such as a container. Bjarne Mikkelsen, Goods-in Section manager, is very positive: “Each three-man team works at its own speed, one person unloading and two palleting. The container is unloaded quickly, but without any stress. There is little bending involved and the Vaculex ParceLift takes the weight of the parcel. Work positions are natural and optimal for the individual, even when parcels weigh 60 lbs.” At the opposite end of the belt, where the boxes are palletised, JYSK can also see benefits.

Bjarne Mikkelsen states “the parcels are at the correct height and can simply be placed onto the pallet. The pallet itself is raised or lowered electronically to suit.”

Tested by JYSK employees on-site prior to purchase

JYSK thoroughly check equipment before making any changes to the workflow. Therefore, a test machine was installed prior to writing the purchase order. Bjarne Mikkelsen comments “training employees to use the new lifting aid took very little time. Within an hour they were working at speed, moving naturally to lift and release each parcel. Everyone on all shifts has been trained to optimize flexibility.”

jysk_2When a container backs up to the door, the operator lines up the BeltTrack by moving it along the rails lying flush in the concrete floor. Using the joystick at the head of the machine, the operator is able to extend the conveyor so that it reaches inside the container. Sensors fitted to the top of the lifting aid register the framework of the door and reduce the height accordingly – extending automatically to full operating height once inside the container. The operator can then use the lifting aid to lift each box, placing them successively on the conveyor belt, which moves them to the end of the conveyor. “We haven’t had an opportunity to stress test the equipment yet, but there is no doubt that it helps us unload containers faster” says Bjarne Mikkelsen.
