vipac-d3aThe automated weighing and measuring of small to medium sized parcels is standard practice in the logistics and transport industries, but technological limitations mean companies often measure large palletised loads by hand. This is slow, time-consuming, and uneconomical. New from Vitronic is VIPAC D3, which automates this process.

Mounted on the ceiling or wall, or in a framework configuration, VIPAC D3 features built-in weighing scales upon which operators place a palletised load. Two sensors pass overhead on powered tracks and emit fan-shaped laser beams, which the load reflects back to the sensors. VIPAC D3’s integrated computer builds a three dimensional image of the load and measures its height, width, length, and weight.

The system uses the acquired data to calculate a palletised load’s actual volume and boxed volume (the smallest box that will enclose it). This enables companies to utilise transit and storage space efficiently, and implement fair revenue recovery, which leads to substantial cost savings. In addition, VIPAC D3 increases throughput by automating what would be a manual operation.

Vitronic intends to supply VIPAC D3 to the courier and express parcel delivery industries. Malcolm Smith, Vitronic’s UK Sales Manager, is delighted; “VIPAC D3 is ideal for companies that move or store goods in bulk and want to improve working efficiency. It supplements our range of camera-based parcel recognition products, and means we can offer complete, integrated systems to potential customers.”

VIPAC D3 is available as a mobile unit with moving sensors and portable scales for customers with varying business needs. Castors allow users to reposition the machine as they see fit, making it highly versatile.

Users can programme VIPAC D3 mobile to recognise hand pallet trucks and, through the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags attached to the vehicle, forklift trucks. When measuring a load, the system automatically deducts a truck’s weight and volume. This ensures accurate data acquisition, and allows operators to swiftly move goods in and out of the machine.
