outlook.jpgNHS Supply Chain has today announced the launch of a new and exclusive infant protection product known as BLiSP – Baby Life Support Pouch, via its supply chain route. This new development enables NHS trusts to combat hypothermia in premature babies and increase chances of survival in pre-term infants in partnership with one supplier, NHS Supply Chain, for the first time. The easy to use product, developed by BPI Healthcare alongside NHS Supply Chain, looks set to become a fixture in NHS trusts nationwide and NHS Supply Chain is the exclusive supplier of BLiSP.

With 10% of babies born prematurely, the need for hospitals to provide fast and effective solutions to combat hypothermia is clear. Premature infants lose heat at a much higher rate than regular new-borns and consequently these infants are highly vulnerable to cold stress, so the need to provide proper protective treatment is a primary concern for all hospitals and neonatal wards.

BLiSP’s design enables full access, visual and physical, to the baby at the same time as reducing heat loss during this first, critical period of the baby’s life, when immediate resuscitation and treatment may be necessary. Current practice in many UK hospitals is to use plastic bags to insulate infants, which carry their own risks, and BLiSP has been specifically designed for thermal care, and registered with the MHRA as a class 1 medical device. BLiSP is properly risk assessed, and complies with ISO 13485 for Medical Devices.

Tracey Yeadon, Non-Medical Marketing Manager at NHS Supply Chain, comments: “BLiSP is precisely the kind of specialised product we look to supply trusts with. It is easy to use, alleviates a specific medical dilemma, and represents a significant breakthrough in neonatal care.”
Lorcan Mekitarian, Sales Director at BPI Healthcare, the developers of BLiSP, comments: “We developed BLiSP alongside NHS Supply Chain, and look forward to providing the NHS with this breakthrough medical device via the most sophisticated, professional supply route possible.”
