baled-cardboard.jpgApril brought with it the latest increase in Landfill Tax. Now standing at £32 per tonne, companies that have waste collected and sent to landfill are likely to see a significant rise in their waste costs – PHS Orwak has a simple solution to this issue that could see costs turned into revenue. In a bid to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, Landfill Tax will continue to rise year-on-year and by 2010 the cost would be double that of 2007 – £48 per tonne. This will mean that disposing of general waste, i.e. black bags, is set to become an increasingly expensive activity for all organizations.

Many companies have taken the bull by the horns and turned this into a positive. Landfill space is limited and by adopting a stringent segregation policy there exists an opportunity to not only have baled waste collected for free but some high grade papers, plastics and metals may be sold on.

Martin Hewitt, commercial director for PHS Orwak said: “In many circumstances, the logistics involved with transporting and disposing of waste for a contractor far outweighs its value. However, the smart companies have recognised the value in segregating and baling attractive waste streams.

“Clear and clean plastic wrap for instance can be sold for up to £120 per tonne if stored in bales and placed in an accessible location. A company that fills a wheelie bin full of plastic bottles each week on the other hand may struggle to find a company that will dispose of it for free, let alone negotiate a price.”

With waste disposal becoming a growing cost for many businesses, balers and compactors reduce the amount of collections required and help manage waste more effectively – ultimately make significant savings at a time when the alternative is increasing bills.
