Scotland’s leading independent forklift truck specialist is currently celebrating 40 years in the business… and has no intention of standing still. This latest milestone for Douglas Gillespie Plant (DGP) has been marked by the beginning of a new relationship – with Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks – that is already taking the company to new heights. When Douglas Gillespie commenced operations in East Kilbride, in 1968, his company had just two employees and six forklift trucks. Today the family firm occupies three acres of custom-built premises in Glasgow’s Darnley Industrial Estate, employs over 30 staff and maintains a rental fleet of more than 500 forklift trucks and sideloaders, servicing customers nationwide.

“Adding the Mitsubishi range to DGP’s portfolio is the latest in a series of right moves for us,” says DGP’s Marketing Manager Tracey Gillespie. “We chose to take on the Mitsubishi dealership to give our customers access to some of the best trucks on the market. The world-renowned Mitsubishi brand stands for high quality engineering – which will benefit existing customers and open doors to new customers for us too. It means they will all benefit from market-leading forklifts and DGP’s superior local service and maintenance – the perfect combination.”

One new customer is the Alloa-based Oran Group, a leader in waste management and recycling which recently turned to DGP to upgrade its forklift truck fleet. As a Mitsubishi dealership, DGP was able to offer two 2.5 tonne and two 3.0 tonne diesel models from the manufacturer’s flagship ‘N series’.

“When embarking upon our new relationship with Douglas Gillespie Plant, we sought flexibility, product knowledge and a high quality service,” says Jim McLeary, Manager of Oran’s Material Recycling Facility. “We needed robust trucks that were able to deploy sophisticated attachments under intensive working conditions, driving up and down ramps to load and unload lorries. DGP delivered a fantastic package. The Mitsubishi forklifts work around the clock and we haven’t lost any operational time to breakdowns.”

Glasgow-based specialist foam manufacturer Caledonian Industries is one of DGP’s oldest customers. When its forklift contract recently came up for renewal, DGP recommended a 1.6 tonne model from the Mitsubishi ‘FBNT series’ of three-wheel electric trucks.

Caledonian required a forklift that was tough and reliable… but with a delicate enough touch to handle fragile items such as foam seals for the computer industry. The high-precision, pollution-free FBNT was considered ideally suited for the company’s workload and working environment.

Caledonian’s Managing Director Alan Thornton says: “We’ve worked with Douglas Gillespie Plant for nearly 40 years and I can always rely on them to identify the trucks that will best meet our particular needs.”

Tracey Gillespie attributes the company’s continuing success to its long history of commitment to outstanding customer service, its product expertise and its flexibility. “At DGP we pride ourselves on the unbiased advice we give to our customers. That way we ensure each customer has the best materials handling and servicing solution to suit their individual needs.”

Another cause for celebration this year has been the presentation to DGP of a Mitsubishi Gold Award, in recognition of its excellent standards. On behalf of Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks UK, General Manager Terry Foreman says: “The exceptional quality and reliability of our Mitsubishi products, united with Douglas Gillespie Plant’s very high standards of customer care, promise a bright future for our new relationship.”
