Do you really need to pack in brand new boxes? This is the question being asked by Sadlers, the UK’s leading supplier of used and surplus cardboard boxes. In volatile conditions like the ones seen over the past 18 months Sadlers offer a cheaper, more sustainable solution. They’ve answered some common questions about switching to used and redundant packaging.

What are the benefits of switching to used boxes?

Throughout 2021 you’ve seen the price of cardboard boxes skyrocket and it’s affecting everyone’s bottom line. The cost of new boxes is increasing every couple of months which is unprecedented, and there’s no sign of the problem resolving. In fact, we’re in the busiest quarter for packaging and demand is higher than ever. Used boxes aren’t subject to the same shortages that have caused long lead times and higher prices, and the cost remains low while availability is good.

If the boxes are used does that mean they could be damaged?

We hand-sort and grade all of our used boxes, removing and recycling any damaged boxes to ensure our customers only receive boxes that are good quality and fit-for-purpose. Used boxes will normally have some tape attached from their previous life but our customers do not find this to be a problem.

What about surplus boxes?

We rescue redundant cardboard boxes that are brand new and in pristine condition and give them a new life. These boxes could be misprints or leftovers from a project that didn’t go to plan. Plain or printed, they are usually destined for the baler until we step in and divert them to the reuse market. They are a fantastic way to buy new boxes at low cost.

Are printed boxes suitable for me?

The cost savings are huge so many companies happily use printed cardboard boxes for shipping from A to B or for storage. They are popular with removals, distributors and self-storage companies. Some companies even use printed boxes for shipping to the end user and share this proudly with their customers; it’s a more sustainable option as it prevents waste and reduces a company’s environmental impact. We stock plain boxes for anyone who feels a print isn’t right for them.

What kind of range do you have?

We stock a large range of sizes and grades and new items are added to our website frequently. For those who want regular, reliable supplies we recommend used boxes as the supplies of these are frequent, predictable and plentiful. We’ve recently joined forces with a new supplier on three outstanding and versatile used boxes, product codes AG007, AG016 and AF999, which are proving popular in a wide variety of industries and are a fraction of the price of new for their size and strength.
