With spooky season in full swing, the Halloween attraction market is gearing up to welcome thrill-seekers to the many scare mazes taking place across the UK. While these experiences may provide visitors with a single night of adrenaline and horror, they are the result of months of planning, with complex logistics involved in creating experiences that are guaranteed to leave people terrified.

Careers awareness campaign, Generation Logistics is here to reveal the numbers and processes behind bringing these attractions to life – quite literally, just like the living dead! From maze construction and special effects to managing actor rosters and coordinating props, a huge amount of planning, teamwork and logistical expertise goes into creating the finished attraction.

The popularity of Halloween attractions has grown significantly over the past decade. The Halloween and Scare Attraction Association estimates that more than 500,000 visits are made to UK scare events every October¹. One of the biggest attractions in the UK is Thorpe Park’s annual Fright Night events, which run throughout the month of Halloween. Like all large-scale events, planning for Fright Nights begins immediately after the previous season ends. The entire strategy is reviewed and analysed, ready to begin work again for the following year.

One of the main attractions Halloween fanatics look forward to at this time of year is scare mazes, designed to put visitors’ nerves to the test with carefully planned jump scares. However, to ensure these terrifying surprises are timed perfectly, the mazes have to be designed and built far in advance to a high standard. The mazes are built using modular wooden wall sections, each clearly labelled to help actors navigate behind the scenes and allow the layout to be quickly adapted or re-themed². Constructors also create hidden corridors which run alongside the visitor pathways, allowing actors to move discreetly between rooms³, increasing the chances of taking the attendees by surprise.

It’s clear the actors play a huge role across the scare maze industry. As the people responsible for delivering the scares, the attraction would be nothing without them. With over 130 actors booked for each Fright Night event3, the scare mazes and roaming zones require a team of around 20–25 performers, with actors rotating throughout the night to provide breaks and cover, keeping the Halloween experience running smoothly.

Another key consideration is the sheer number of props required to create a realistic and convincing scare experience. Scare mazes rely on a range of specialist equipment, props and set pieces to create a realistic, immersive atmosphere. Planning and installing these elements can take hours of preparation, while the cost of individual props can range from £500 to £15,0005, depending on their size and complexity. Depending on the theme of the maze, examples of props at Fright Nights vary from medical equipment, dental chairs, chainsaws, salvaged cinema projectors and arcade machines to even life-sized model livestock used to recreate a convincing farm environment6. With such a variety of props and attention to detail, these spaces can be transformed into immersive horror experiences for guests.

Bethany Windsor, Programme Director at Generation Logistics, comments: “Halloween is an exciting time of year for horror fanatics to come together and visit scare mazes across the country. Whether they come for the jump scares, gruesome props or immersive sets, these attractions wouldn’t be possible without the hard-working logistics teams behind the scenes.

“As planning for the following year begins as soon as the current event ends, it highlights the dedication and coordination required to bring these spooky attractions to life. A career in logistics offers the opportunity to play a vital role in making these experiences possible, demonstrating just how varied the sector can be.”
