Founded in 1998, Lucas Systems helps distribution centre and warehouse operations harness the power of data with AI, machine learning, speech recognition, and optimisation models to drive operational agility and improved performance.
Joshua Franker, Head of Marketing at Lucas Systems speaks to Warehouse & Logistics News.
What are your best-known products/solutions/services?
We’re best known for Jennifer™, our AI-powered voice-directed warehousing solution, along with a broader suite of optimisation tools that help streamline warehouse and distribution centre operations. Jennifer enables hands-free, eyes-up workflows, orchestrates labour, optimises pick paths, and integrates with technologies such as barcode scanning, RFID, and smart glasses. Our Warehouse Optimisation Software extends those capabilities with Travel Optimisation, which can reduce walking by 30–50%, as well as Dynamic Slotting, Warehouse Execution System, and Pallet Optimisation. We have also built a reputation over nearly 30 years for exceptional and bespoke customer service, providing comprehensive operational analysis and process engineering support through turnkey implementation and 24/7 technical assistance.
Which industry sectors are your customers in and which ones are growing fastest?
Our customers span a broad range of distribution-heavy industries, including retail and ecommerce, where direct-to-consumer and omnichannel fulfilment are key; grocery and foodservice, which rely on high-volume, highaccuracy distribution; beverage, including beer, wine, and spirits producers and regional distributors; healthcare, from pharmaceutical and medical device companies to dental and health product distributors; and industrial and manufacturing organisations, including MRO, HVAC, electrical parts, and global manufacturing operations.
In terms of growth, retail and ecommerce is one of the fastestmoving sectors, driven by continued online shopping growth, same-day delivery expectations, and increasingly complex omnichannel fulfilment. Healthcare and third-party logistics are also expanding quickly as organisations invest in stronger compliance, real-time inventory visibility, and more flexible, scalable warehouse technology.
What are your most recent products and innovations?
Our latest innovations evolve our longstanding focus on making warehouse operations faster, more intelligent, and easier for managers and workers on the floor. In 2026, we’re extending Jennifer, our voice and orchestration engine, into collaborative robotic workflows, allowing associates to work handsfree alongside autonomous cobots without relying on barcode scans or touchscreens.
We’re also advancing our AIdriven optimisation portfolio with Best Pallet Matching, which creates work in real time so teams can pick for multiple stores at once using double or triple pallet jacks. At the same time, enhancements to our Dynamic Work Optimisation engine are accelerating map compilation, improving palletisation strategies, and refining work sequencing to reduce travel and balance workloads. Together, these capabilities give distribution centres practical ways to improve performance without the cost and complexity of capital-intensive mechanical automation.
What are the major trends and developments affecting your category and your customers, and how are you responding?
The warehouse and distribution industry is being reshaped by persistent labour pressures, rising customer expectations and greater operational volatility. Organisations must improve throughput, accuracy and resilience while managing complex fulfilment profiles, ageing systems and limited appetite for disruptive capital projects. At the same time, AI, machine learning, robotics and cloud technologies are creating significant opportunities, but many businesses are finding that rigid automation cannot adapt quickly enough when demand, inventory or workforce conditions change.
We are responding by helping customers create more dynamic, software-driven operations. Our continued investment in R&D is advancing AI-powered optimisation, voice-directed workflows, dynamic slotting and the orchestration of workers and collaborative robots. Just as importantly, our solutions are scalable, extensible and designed to integrate with existing warehouse systems and automation. This enables customers to improve performance and employee effectiveness today while retaining the flexibility to adopt emerging technologies and respond quickly as their operations evolve.
Can you tell us about any areas where you’re currently making technical advances e.g., safety, sustainability, environment?
We are advancing our warehouse execution system technology to make sustainability measurable and operational. Our focus is on dynamic, real-time workflows that reduce the everyday waste embedded in distribution operations, including unnecessary travel, paper use, packaging, rework, returns, and inefficient equipment utilisation. Voicedirected and digital processes eliminate static paper instructions while improving accuracy and reducing errors. Dynamic work optimisation creates smarter assignments that minimise walking, repeat aisle trips, equipment switching, and energy consumption.
We are also advancing cartonisation and slotting capabilities to right-size packaging, ship less air, improve trailer capacity, reduce replenishments, and make better use of existing warehouse space. These improvements support safety as well: less travel, fewer equipment movements, clearer task guidance, and reduced physical and cognitive strain can create a safer, more worker-friendly environment. By connecting environmental goals with operational metrics such as travel distance, carton fill, paper consumption, return rates, and worker effort, we help warehouses lower both cost and environmental impact.
