Managing Director at Interroll Ltd
Interroll products and solutions are used in express and postal services, e-commerce, airports, the food & beverage industry, fashion, automotive sectors and many other manufacturing industries. Among the end users are leading brands such as Amazon, Bosch, Coca-Cola, DHL, Nestlé, Procter & Gamble, Siemens, Walmart and Zalando.
Hilton Campbell, Managing Director of Interroll Ltd spoke to Warehouse & Logistics News.
What are your best-known products/solutions/services?
Interroll is the leading global supplier of products and solutions for material handling.
Our comprehensive product portfolio meets the needs of system integrators and OEMs all over the world for conveying, sorting, storing, and picking. Our products are also designed to meet diverse needs across all material handling tasks.
The industries we focus on are airports, courier, express and parcel, retail and fashion, food & beverage, storage and distribution, manufacturing logistics, tyres & automotive and pharmaceutical.
How do you think your industry sector is performing at the moment?
The UK market is broadly in line with the international picture, and slightly exceeding the growth of others in sectors like airport security and distribution. E-commerce is also showing signs of growth again.
How many markets are you in and what is your biggest market?
While our solutions are found in any industry where there is a need for material handling, our key sectors are:
– Airports
– Courier, express and parcel (CEP)
– E-commerce, retail and fashion
– Food and beverage
– Manufacturing logistics
– Storage and distribution
– Tyre and automotive
In the UK, our largest sectors are food and beverage and distribution, followed by e-commerce.
What are your most recent product innovations?
Our latest new product is MCP PLAY, a major upgrade to our Modular Conveyor Platform. We launched it this year at LogiMAT in Stuttgart, and then for the UK at IMHX in Birmingham in September.
We also won IFOY Award in the category “Special of the Year 2025” for MCP PLAY last June. The product has the following key features:
• Increased throughput. With the “adjust to gap” function, items can be transported at shorter intervals along the conveyor line. According to calculations by the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML), continuous flow, higher average speeds, and increased conveying capacity can boost system throughput by up to 100% compared to a more traditional zero-pressure accumulation solution.
• Energy savings. Continuous movement not only increases capacity – it also reduces the energy spikes that occur when conveyor sections repeatedly start and stop. Depending on the application, this can deliver energy consumption reductions of up to 30%, with lower wear and tear on components.
• Simplified control architecture. By embedding intelligence directly into the conveyor modules, MCP PLAY minimises dependence on large central PLC systems. This decentralised approach means less programming, less cabling, and faster commissioning. Projects that once took weeks to fine-tune can now be deployed in days.
• Flexibility & scalability. System layouts can be adjusted quickly to match changing product mixes or seasonal peaks. Parameters can be reconfigured through the control layer without tearing down hardware – a major advantage in markets where agility is key.
• Investment protection. MCP PLAY is fully compatible with existing MCP installations. Customers can retrofit their systems to benefit from higher throughput and efficiency without replacing entire lines.
Can you tell us about any recent customer contract wins or projects and how you helped the customer meet their challenges?
Interroll can best be described as an enabler to both small and medium-sized integrators, as well as a strong reliable partner to larger integrators. We pride ourselves on this partnership approach, and our track-record of delivering projects in which our solutions and engineering expertise make a major positive difference.
The ability for Interroll to offer solutions at scale, within a short lead time, for both brown and greenfield projects, is what makes Interroll a stand out supplier within our sector.
What is your strategy for growth and success in 2026?
The data is showing that the overall sector will grow by as little as 1%, but Interroll can significantly outperform this. Our strategy is to leverage our new products, coming into full effect in 2026, and ensure we grow in our ability to offer outstanding service, in the form of spare parts and maintenance to both our direct customers and the end customer.
Can you tell us about any areas, such as in AI, where you’re currently making technical advances?
Our focus remains strongly on Industry 4.0, and the internet of things IoT. For example, MCP PLAY adds a host of smart features to the industry-standard modular conveyor platform, allowing it to work as part of a state-of-the-art connected warehouse without requiring extensive additional programming. It also unlocks data-driven predictive maintenance, which can deliver significant productivity gains.
As far as AI is concerned, while we are not currently using AI in the solutions we provide, it is on our radar. One area that shows potential is layouting, where AI-generated recommendations based on modelling and assessing multiple possible configurations may be able to identify an optimal solution more quickly than was traditionally possible.
Can you foresee autonomous mobile robots and goods-to-person systems becoming more mainstream to improve efficiency and reduce manual labour?
Yes, but only to a relatively limited extent compared to the efficiency increases that fixed automation systems have already achieved, and will continue to deliver.
In our applications, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) can be used for interfaces to the fixed conveyor system, where high flexibility is needed – for example if items need to be transported between floors in an elevator.
Throughput-wise, they are limited in comparison with conventional conveying. More advanced robots like humanoids have several challenges, including in relation to safety, and the technology isn’t ready for industrial usage.
Is the industry placing a greater emphasis on sustainability?
Yes, an increasing proportion of companies are expecting their tier-1 suppliers to have a focus on sustainability, compliance and equality, so it is increasingly essential. The challenge is offering this while remaining competitive. Signing up to these principles is not a ‘switch-on, switch-off’, it’s about the way of doing business right across the organisation, and it’s something we take very seriously at Interroll.
Is the industry being agile enough in adapting to shifting global trade regulations?
Agile supply chains have become a key differentiator. Companies must be agile, and solutions need to be scalable. For the medium term, companies must find a smart way to operate in turbulent times.
What sets your company apart from others?
Interroll is a global player, offering a global standard, but run in a way that is decentralised and closely in-touch with local customers and markets. This is what makes Interroll a standout partner for all customer sizes.
How future-proof and flexible are your solutions?
A leading global supplier like Interroll cannot stand still. We respect our competition, they are typically smaller, and sometimes highly agile, and therefore Interroll must remain “fit”. One of our guiding principles is long-term thinking, so future proofing the business as far as our people, financial stability and innovation are concerned is high on our agenda.
How would you sum up your company in three words?
Quality, speed, and simplicity.
