Jon Lewis, Managing Director at John Scott Works Ltd speaks to Warehouse & Logistics News.
What are your best-known products/solutions/services?
We are recognised for our fully cold-formed steel mezzanines, with in-house rolled sections ranging from 200 to 550mm deep. Our dedicated installation teams are supported by experienced structural and technical engineers specialising in complex integrator projects.
Our sales colleagues are always happy to be the first point of contact, offering complimentary visits to customers to provide personal advice and more information about our bespoke mezzanine solutions. With every stage managed in-house, from design and production to installation, we maintain short communication lines both internally and with our customers, ensuring a seamless and efficient process throughout.
Which industry sectors are your customers in and which ones are growing fastest?
Our mezzanine solutions are fully bespoke, designed and built to meet each customer’s specific requirements. We support businesses across a wide range of sectors: from small-scale projects to large, complex installations.
In recent years, we have seen particularly strong growth in the Self Storage, Integrator, and 3PL sectors. As these industries evolve, companies are increasingly seeking ways to optimise workflows and maximise the use of their existing space.
What are your most recent products and innovations?
We are constantly innovating to enhance both our processes and products. Recently, we added new welding robots to our Wolverhampton factory to optimise production and improve our internal workflow. Earlier this year, we also introduced a state-of-the-art saw machine. These investments improve our efficiency and allow faster lead times without compromising quality.
On the product side, we have introduced the B-Deck and PRO-SPAN. The B-Deck is ideal for heavy-duty mezzanine solutions requiring higher point loads. PRO-SPAN is our new standard decking finish: priced the same as traditional decking, but combining the benefits of MDF and chipboard. This high-quality P6 finish is both fire-retardant (Bfl-s1, D-s2 d0) and anti-slip R10, while offering a premium appearance.
What are the major trends and developments affecting your category and your customers, and how are you responding?
One of the key trends affecting our industry is the fluctuation of steel tariffs, which can impact both cost and supply. In response, we are working closely with steel mills and have established our own stockholding within the Profielnorm Group. This ensures greater stability, faster lead times, and reliability for our customers.
What’s the latest news from your company?
At John Scott Works, we are in the business of building trust, with a strong focus on staying close to our customers. A major milestone in the Profielnorm Group’s growth strategy is the new production facility in Plainwell, Michigan, USA. Since starting in early 2023, Profielnorm USA has been preparing to expand operations. The Plainwell plant will boost production capacity and reduce lead times by bringing manufacturing closer to our American customers. We are proud to be part of a stable and growing international group.
In addition, we recently partnered with Togetr ERP to adopt their platform over the coming years. Togetr integrates seamlessly with our existing IT landscape and smart manufacturing systems. Importantly, their values align with our core belief of building trust. This collaboration will help us maintain best-in-class quality as we grow internationally, while allowing our own software team to focus on customised tools that deliver immediate value for our customers.
In a sector increasingly focused on sustainability, John Scott Works’ lean manufacturing models reduces material waste and transport-related emissions, rolling over 14 miles of profile each week. We hold ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001 certifications, reflecting our commitment to quality, environmental performance, and occupational health and safety, and a broader philosophy of responsible manufacturing.
