The Door & Hardware Federation has unveiled the UK’s first Ofqual-regulated and ABBE-accredited qualifications dedicated to the building hardware industry. The launch event was held at the British Motor Museum in Gaydon exclusively for DHF members of the Building Hardware Group, manufacturers from the Timber and Metal Doorset Groups, and invited industry guests. It marked an important milestone for the sector. As the first Ofqual regulated qualification of its kind, and accredited by ABBE, the programme sets a new standard for professional competence in building hardware.

Fire safety in industrial and commercial buildings relies on more than alarms and evacuation routes. In large, open environments, physical barriers play a critical role in slowing the spread of fire and protecting people, property, and critical infrastructure. Fire roller shutter doors are designed to operate automatically during a fire, closing off sections of a building to help contain flames and smoke. While they are often seen as security features, their primary purpose is fire compartmentation, a function made possible by a combination of mechanical design, sensors, and fail-safe systems, writes BID Group.

Wilton has a large recycling centre located in an exposed landfill area which is subject to challenging weather conditions, meaning stronger doors were needed that could protect against intense wind pressure. GS Doors’ solution was the DUAL-AIR folding door, which is able to perform a high number of operations without wearing out or damaging essential parts. With the ability to perform up to 1,000,000 opening/closing cycles, the door is built for continual use.
With warehouses busier than ever and doors in constant use, it is vitally important that first class training is provided for those who build and install doors so that the highest standards of competence are reached.
