Celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, the Automated Material Handling Systems Association (AMHSA) is the voice of the UK’s automated intralogistics sector.

Growing membership

AMHSA continues to grow – we now have a membership of over 70 of the UK’s leading AMH equipment suppliers, system integrators and logistics consultancies. With our new President, Hilton Campbell, at the helm since April, we have renewed our focus on our core pillars – networking & promotion, quality & standards and training – with two individuals from the membership appointed to lead each pillar.

Positive market predictions

The UK warehouse automation market is undeniably sluggish right now. Although economic uncertainty and trade tariffs have dampened demand, there have been several large-scale automation projects from selected retailers, e-com companies and 3PLs in the UK this year, in which some AMHSA members have been heavily involved.

Most analysts have downgraded their short-term forecasts for both mobile and fixed automation, but the latter is predicted to improve in the longer term. While the long-term forecast for mobile automation has been downgraded some-what, this sector still remains on a strong upward trajectory. According to the research platform, MarketsandMarkets, the global automated material handling equipment market is projected to grow from over USD 33 billion in 2025 to more than USD 51 billion by 2030 – a CAGR of almost 9%.

Strong drivers for automation

Rising wages and labour availability issues remain drivers for automation in many industries. In addition, companies are increasingly keen to harness the potential of big data and AI in their operations, which requires automation and digitalisation. Automation can help to solve some of the most challenging issues in intralogistics today, such as dealing with labour scarcity, fulfilling omnichannel orders cost-effectively and building resilience in supply chains.

New AIV Group

As part of its role representing the UK industry on the international stage, AMHSA is at the forefront in developing the AIV (Autonomous Intralogistics Vehicles) Group within the European Materials Handling Federation (FEM), to define standards and gather market data for this burgeoning sector.

Events in 2026

As well as hosting our own events, we plan to be present at all of the major UK exhibitions in our sector next year – we look forward to seeing you there.
