Grocery retailer, Migros is operating an automated solution from KNAPP to optimise deliveries of fresh food products to more than 150 stores.

One of Switzerland’s largest retailers and comprised of ten regional cooperatives, Migros has partnered with KNAPP for numerous projects since 2012. In the latest site to go live, KNAPP has supplied an automated solution for the formation of store-friendly, mixed pallets at Migros Aare’s distribution centre in Schönbühl.

Rapid handling keeps food fresh

The Schönbühl DC supplies over 150 stores with fresh food products across the meat, fruit & vegetable, dairy, bakery and convenience food sectors. Endto-end automation at the facility ensures error-free and reliable order fulfilment. As each store has a different size and layout, deliveries are tailored to each one, making shelf replenishment easier for employees in the stores.

Intelligent vision and control systems

All logistics processes at the site are handled by the all-in-one software solution, SAP® EWM by KNAPP, which is a combined warehouse management system (WMS) and warehouse control system (WCS). SAP® EWM by KNAPP processes the information it receives from KNAPP’s machine vision technology, controls the automation and connects all areas of the warehouse.

Automatic creation of store orders

KNAPP’s FAST Picking solution automatically forms pallet loads of mixed containers according to store orders. The system depalletises, destacks, stores and sequences the containers – which would be heavy for humans to handle – before re-stacking and palletising them. KNAPP’s advanced Vision imageprocessing technology analyses the packing pattern of inbound pallet loads in order to optimise the depalletising and destacking processes. The containers are then stored in KNAPP’s Evo Shuttle automated store (with 37,400 storage locations) or in the high-bay racking system (2,000 locations), before being sequenced by a total of 14 Fastbox towers. The containers then arrive at the downstream stacking and palletising robots in the correct sequence for the fully automatic formation of stable, store-friendly pallets. The solution processes up to 8,400 containers per hour without errors, optimising lead times to ensure that groceries arrive at the stores in top quality.
