What’s the most exciting thing about your job?

Who has inspired you most in your career?

My first job was on a Trade Counter which was run by a guy called Eddie Carman. He taught me so much about customer service and gave me a great introduction to business. He also taught me how to deal with all sorts of people and situations, always keeping his head no matter what. I still think of him, he’s been an inspiration for many years.

If you had your time again, what would you do different?

Probably join the army, with both my dad and brother being in the service. I would have enjoyed the structure and the travel. However, when I was starting out all the Mines and Shipyards were closing, so when I was offered a job working at a Builders Merchants I took it and never looked back.

Boxing, it’s hard to imagine now but when I was younger I used to box at Featherweight.

What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s happened in your career?

When I started work at 16 I had long curly hair but was a bit rebellious. So, I had had my head shaved completely and the infamous Eddie Carman, made me wear a ridiculous flat cap as he told me my new look wasn’t suitable for representing the company. It was so bad that even me Mam wouldn’t speak to me.

First choice would be Ray Winstone, together with Ian McShane and Charlie Hunnam from the Gentlemen.

What is the greatest luxury in your life?

I’ve recently taken up diving and been diving in Mexico which was fantastic. I would like to dive in Bali and Thailand.

If you won the Lottery, what would you do?

Definitely keep working so that I could annoy everyone. But seriously, I would travel but my main priority would be setting my family up for life.

Who or what makes you laugh?

Sunderland FC and the Simpsons.

What’s your favourite music album?

Anything by the Jam. I’m going to see From the Jam, a brilliant tribute band this week.

What’s your favourite movie or Netflix series?

The Gentlemen – both the film and the series on Netflix.

What would be your advice to someone thinking about coming into the industry (apart from “don’t do it”)?

Come in with an open mind and ignore the gossip – most of it’s not really true. Also be prepared to work hard, treat people firmly but fairly and be willing to help.
