The everywoman in Transport & Logistics Awards, Woman of the Year Award, is given each year to one passionate and dedicated woman whose vision, innovative approach and success makes her an outstanding role model and, importantly, encourages more women & girls to choose a career in Transport and Logistics.
The 2023 Woman of the Year Award was presented to Shipra Singh, General Manager at Amazon EU SARL Ltd, from London. Shipra leads a team of over 200 managers across 125 sites in 12 countries within the UK and EU, and is responsible for the transportation operations, driver experience and yard infrastructure and technology programs for Amazon. After graduating as an Engineer in 2010 she relocated to Japan to start her career in the automobile industry in a 100% male dominated environment. She then returned to education in 2014 to complete an MBA at Oxford University. After graduating for the second time, she worked across multiple operations in the UK, leading large teams within warehousing operations, and in 2019 she joined transportation and logistics organisation in Amazon as their youngest female senior manager in the EU.
In 2021 she was promoted to lead her current organisation, EU TOM (Transportation operations Management) within the Amazon Transportation Services and since then Shipra has pioneered cost saving and efficiency improvements, whilst also leading her organisation with the vision to create gender parity in hiring, improving the gender equity from no female managers in 2020 to 25% female managers in operation roles across the EU.
Shipra has been described as a ‘force to be reckoned with’, with the sheer determination and drive to complete whatever she puts her mind to. The judges were absolutely blown away by everything she’s achieved in her current role, commenting that she really has built her company’s freight solutions from the bottom up. She has been instrumental in chartering a path for efficiency and as a result has made a staggering $5 million in cost savings. Shipra’s vision to create Earth’s safest yard operations has seen her combine technology innovation, training and infrastructure upgrades to reduce incidents in yards across her business. She has enabled her team to develop, pilot and implement creative solutions and is leading her organisation with the vision to create gender parity in hiring.
Shipra is an inclusive leader with a highly approachable leadership style and actively mentors female managers. In 2022 she hired 40 female leaders and mentored eighteen female managers to help them achieve their professional goals. Not only this she is a proud founding sponsor of her company’s Women in Leadership Program and Men as Allies Program, which together have benefitted over 200 males and females to date.
Her goal is to leverage the sisterhood and transform the landscape of women in Transport & Logistics by continuing to push boundaries, challenge perceptions, change the gender balance and ensure her innovations can bring more females into the industry. She is actively advocating for women by researching and understanding the barriers women come across when entering and working within the industry to design working terms, conditions and driving schedules that fit women’s lives and requirements.
Shipra is innovative in her workforce strategy and her use and drive of digitalisation and technology is remarkable. The Judges hailed her a true inspiration to all within the industry and unanimously agreed that we truly could all learn something from her.
Shipra commented: “This award is a representation not just for me but for everyone who has supported, mentored, and developed me to be recognised at this prestigious platform. This honour has also given me the confidence that my belief to create equity for Females in the transportation and logistics sector, to coach, nurture and develop them is a relevant and crucial goal. I look forward to building this funnel for more women to join the sector.”
This year’s Woman of the Year is undoubtably one to watch for the future, her passion for women in the workplace is unmatched and given the support of this platform she will continue to break down barriers and pave the way for women in the industry whilst also changing transport and logistics for the better.
