Impact Handling is expanding its Heavy Truck Service Division with the addition of 5 more high-spec Mercedes Sprinter vans for the servicing of Konecranes and other large lift trucks. These five latest vehicles are being specially kitted out for this purpose and will help the expanding UK-wide service fleet in meeting the increased business demands of this critical market sector.

Impact is the sole UK distributor for Konecranes Lift Trucks, which it supplies in capacities from 10 to 65 tonnes. This premium Swedish manufacturer’s range includes Large-Capacity Forklift trucks, Reach Stackers and Container Lift Trucks. Keeping them in action requires highly trained and specialised engineers, whose ability to reach customers sites quickly, with everything they need on board their van, in terms of both Parts and Special Tools is vital.

John Bertholini, Impact’s Technical Trainer, explains: “Our response time for urgent calls is Market Leading and this is essential, considering the importance of each heavy-duty truck and the major investment made in it. In heavy industrial operations, for instance, there may be just one of these trucks on site for a particular task. If it stops, the business stops. Other typical applications include busy ports and terminals. There, delays in shipments due to lift truck downtime can result in extremely high penalty charges.”

As well as dealing with breakdowns and emergency repairs, the Heavy Truck Service Engineers must be efficient in carrying out routine preventative maintenance and safety inspections. Compared to similar tasks on smaller trucks, these jobs tend to involve deeper and more time-consuming work – sometimes requiring two technicians.

The tools and equipment these Heavy Lift Truck Service Vans carry is larger and more specialised than a Regular Service Van, they include, for example, heavy-duty torque wrenches, lubrication transfer kits, high-visibility lighting, and high-capacity inverters for powering and charging equipment. The vans’ customised racking and additional storage features have been designed specifically to hold all of this, along with containers for substantial volumes of oils and other fluids. There is also enough containment to handle the greater size and number of spare parts and components carried for large trucks.

Impact chose the Mercedes Sprinter as the optimum model for its needs. Front-wheel drive has been selected due to its lower weight, which allows extra load capacity in order to cope with the increased level of Parts and Tools carried on these vehicles.

“Above all, we wanted high-quality, high-performance vehicles that would allow our dedicated engineers to do the best job possible for our customers,” John Bertholini stresses. “A quality service deserves quality equipment.”

Supporting heavy industries

Building on many years of experience in supplying and servicing trucks for heavy-duty sectors, Impact offers a wide variety of Konecranes models. Each can be tailored with the necessary attachments and specifications to meet individual application needs. Impact’s large truck offering also covers bespoke MOL terminal tractors.

In addition to docks, ports, rail hubs and airports, Konecranes lift trucks carry out the heaviest jobs in such harsh environments as steel, concrete, pulp and paper works, automotive, mobile home, renewable energy equipment and other factories, and recycling centres.

The trucks are characteristically both built for arduous conditions and finished to a very high standard, a combination which delivers a low total cost of ownership (TCO). Their comfortable, spacious, Optima cabins provide clear visibility and are fitted with high-tech instrumentation and displays. For maximum intelligence and efficiency in fleet management and maintenance, their condition and activity can be monitored remotely using Konecranes’ Truconnect® tool.

Andy Armitage, Impact’s Sales Manager for Heavy Equipment, concludes: “With the additional custom-equipped service vans we are expanding and strengthening our capacity to support Konecranes trucks and MOL terminal tractors in the field. Our customer base for heavy materials handling equipment is growing and we are committed to maintaining the high standards our partners have come to expect.”
