Apprenticeships offer an attractive training option for smaller companies in the lifting industry, according to Ross Moloney, CEO of the Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA). Smaller companies, who arguably have a weaker position in the labour market and thus a greater need to develop their own talent, were often able to offer apprenticeships on the coat tails of larger company provision. As workforces have shrunk and large companies have separated or fragmented, this model has changed, but some SMEs to their credit have continued with apprenticeship schemes, and have benefited accordingly. One such in the lifting equipment industry is William Hackett Lifting Products, which is excited about the new Lifting Equipment Technician apprenticeship scheme.

Steve Hutin, Managing Director of lifting gear supplier Rope and Sling Specialists Ltd (RSS), has welcomed reports that the Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA) Level 3 Lifting Equipment Technician apprenticeship standard is now officially live. Proposed nuclear power station project Sizewell C, of which RSS is part, includes the Young Sizewell C programme, aimed at those aged 16-21 living in Suffolk or Norfolk who can register to hear about career opportunities—even before construction starts. The initiative helps connect young people to in-demand career and apprenticeship opportunities in the region.

In Gera, Stahlo operates an unparalleled independent steel service centre where 400,000 tons of sheet steel can be processed on four production lines to meet the most demanding customer-specific quality requirements every year. The material flow in the coil store is served by two fully automated Demag process cranes; another ten Demag cranes are installed in the five bays where strips are split and shaped blanks are cut on large presses. The automatic cranes handle the steel coils by magnet and the aluminium coils with grippers.
It is satisfying to see the next generation of lifting equipment technicians being trained up to serve in the warehouse industry.
