The Isle of Wight’s largest independent freight carrier, Steve Porter Transport, has reported strong growth throughout 2015.
This is largely driven by a significant increase in its unaccompanied ‘drop trailer’ service between Southampton and the Isle of Wight.
As the largest operator of this kind of service to the Island, Steve Porter moved an average of 1,150 trailers across the Solent every month throughout 2015. Further growth in 2016 is widely anticipated as the service continues to appeal to the Island’s retailers and supermarkets.
Steve Porter Transport Managing Director, Malcolm Gibson, said: “The drop trailer service is now widely acknowledged as the most efficient means of delivery for goods to the Island and is being adopted by our growing client base of retailers and supermarkets.”
The drop trailer service is predominantly aimed at those businesses with a requirement for regular, multiple loads and who do not want to tie up their valuable resources travelling across to the island. Full trailers are ‘dropped’ by the customer at either Steve Porter’s depot or the ferry port and, once the goods are delivered on the Isle of Wight, the trailer is re-instated for customer collection.
Gibson continued: “The drop trailer is a unique offshore service that we offer to businesses on the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands and one which allows customers to deploy their drivers on alternative routes. As a shortage of drivers continues to be a major challenge across the industry, minimising their downtime has become increasingly important. Our drop trailer service offers a cost effective and efficient solution to this and we expect to see further growth in 2016 as more Island businesses realise the benefits.”
Steve Porter Transport has facilities across five sites in Southampton, Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight and operates a consolidation and daily groupage service between Southampton, and the Isle of Wight.
