Site: A material recycling facility (MRF) 80m x 35m x 13m high, operating 24 hours a day.

Client Brief: The client was looking for an LED energy saving solution as a pilot scheme to monitor for a short term and then fit out across all their MRF facilities across the UK. The LED luminaire needed to have a good warranty and have varying outputs to cope with buildings of different dimensions and heights. Due to the placement of machinery, the re-lamping of existing metal halides was costly and required an access platform with a 60ft reach. They were also keen to improve the general light quality.

The Solution: We specified the LG highbay Bell 180w (18000 lumens) for the pilot scheme. The same product is available in variants ranging from 15000 lumens to 24000 lumens to cope with the varying ceiling heights we will encounter on the other facilities. It was important for the client to maintain some continuity with the product and also have a cast iron warranty from a reputable brand. To this aim, the LG Highbay bell fitted the bill perfectly.

after_1We surveyed the site and were finding lux levels ranging from 25 – 70 lx with the old sodium lighting. With the new LED highbays installed we achieved between 150 – 200 lx, a vast improvement, while at the same time making considerable savings on maintenance and energy. The installation was completed over one weekend to avoid any disruption to the operation of the facility.

The project was well received by Veolia and we will be looking forward to continuation of this across all UK sites.
