For David Hathaway, the chance to get behind the wheel of a brand new 44-tonne truck proved the perfect 70th birthday present.
Despite entering his eighth decade, David still plays a hands-on role at David Hathaway Transport Limited, the Yate-based company he founded in 1976 and which has grown to become one of the south west’s leading logistics companies.
While his sons Matthew, James and Chris now share the workload of running the business which employs more than 100 people, David holds the office of Chairman and is occasionally seen behind the wheel of one of the trucks in the company’s 64-vehicle fleet.
Indeed, the arrival of David Hathaway Transport’s new flagship truck – a top of the range Scania – was timed to coincide with the birthday celebrations, which also included a specially-made cake featuring another of the company’s lorries.
David Hathaway said: “I feel very lucky to still be playing such an active part in a business that means so much to me. Over the years we’ve built up a strong and loyal customer base, and it’s great to see the company going from strength to strength.”
