A lot of bosses of companies will have given a lot of thought to the input they could personally make to improve the success of their business in 2013. Some may have even made New Year resolutions. For those of you who have thought about it but not quite resolved the way forward, this short article may help.
Bosses don’t all come out of a clone factory with a perfect set of solutions to wipe out all problems. However, there are some well tried and tested activities which, if practised, should have a more than positive impact on your business.
Take responsibility for your actions and the results that follow. The trick here is not to blame others or events, but if you don’t like the outcomes change the inputs. Use the power of goal setting. Anecdotal research suggests that only about 10% of people have written goals for the year ahead. Without clear goals people generally flounder so ensure you have them in place including at least one which could step change success. Decide what you really want. For many people the past tends to determine the future so try visualising what the future will be like and what you need to do to help make it come true. Subscribe to a continuous improvement approach and in so doing try to do a little better every day than the previous one. You don’t need quantum leaps, you definitely do not want the see saw ride of highs and lows. Continuous improvement plans are aimed at just getting tiny improvements to performance on a regular basis, namely the outcome graph continues to run in the direction you expect it to. Don’t give up too soon, just persevere and normally you will win through, but remember this requires constant action, you can’t sit on your backside and wait for it to happen, you have to make it happen. Finally you can take some risks, but where you do, seek feedback from all around you and people involved and then ask yourself how well you did. If it was not as well as expected, work out what you need to do to reach the expected level and then do it.
I hope this guidance will help people to become better bosses. Better bosses normally run the more successful companies and usually all the stakeholders of that organisation do better as a result, whether supplier, customer or employee.
