What brought you to this industry?

I have worked in the automotive industry for my entire career. I started in a dealership upon leaving University, then in the aftermarket and most recently 10 years with a major manufacturer. So when I was approached by Linde to lead their marketing activities, I was very attracted by the prospect of a new and exciting challenge. I think any opportunity to work with the market leader is always very exciting.

What’s the most exciting thing about your job?

At the moment, it’s a steep learning curve. Everything is very new and fresh, which is a very stimulating challenge. The opportunity to learn in a new industry and to also bring to bear the knowledge and experience of my career within automotive, is very exciting.

Who inspired you most in your career?

I have been lucky enough to work and deal with a number of very talented people in my career, from sales people to bosses and customers. I think success in life is down to people, how you can communicate, inspire them and motivate them to excel.

If you were an item in a warehouse, what would you be?

A Linde Reach truck, always aiming higher.

If you had to do it all over again, what would you do different?

Take the plunge and go into business for myself.

What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you at work?

I was on a European sales meeting in Finland, and the week concluded with a day’s Snowmobile safari. I was the one who went too fast, crashed and dislocated his shoulder. Luckily everyone still made their flights, but it was painful for months afterwards.

Who or what makes you laugh?

It’s got to be my youngest son Ben; he is a born comedian and entertainer.

Do you have any hidden talents?

If I do, they are hidden from me.

Who would be your favourite party guest?

Boris Johnson would be good value.

What is the greatest luxury in your life?

I lived in France for 3 years and managed to create a rather nice collection of red wine, it has somewhat diminished over the past three years though.

What is your favourite guilty pleasure?

Fish and chips.

Do you have any secret ambitions?

I want to trek to Mount Everest Base Camp. Maybe I will get the time soon!

What’s your dream holiday destination?

Maldives.

What are your three favourite movies of all time?

Twelve Angry Men, Saving Private Ryan and Gladiator.

What is your favourite book of all time?

If this is a Man by Primo Levi.

What’s your favourite pastime?

I love motorsport, so try and get to Le Mans every year, usually a Grand Prix and also rallying. I am also a keen golfer, whenever time allows, which is difficult with a family.

If you won the Lottery, what would you do?

I always find it sad when someone wins a huge Lottery sum and then say they want to carry on working, that it won’t change them. I would be disappointed if it did not change my life. It would just allow me enough time to get on with the serious business of spending it and really enjoying a new lifestyle with my family.

What would be your advice to someone thinking about coming into the industry (apart from “don’t do it”)?

Listen, learn but also don’t be afraid to challenge the norms and conventions of the industry.
