Van users might welcome a recent slight dip in oil prices, but they should not expect to see it reflected at the pump in the near future accroding to The Fuelcard People.
Steve Clarke, general manager of The Fuelcard People said: “Many filling stations are independent franchises which change according to the advance price at which they ordered stocks. Also, if crude oil prices fall, refining and delivery delay this reaching users, while various middle-men dilute the savings along the way. By the time the supposedly cheaper oil reaches the pump, crude prices have usually risen again. Even if they haven’t filling station owners can’t afford to gamble on prices staying down because history shows that they don’t. With all the current uncertainty in the Middle East, there are no grounds for optimism on oil prices.”
He added that, in reality, nobody should be paying pump prices. “A few have yet to compare the discount fuel card market” he said, “while others are still throwing money away on no-discount fuel cards. Human beings, though, are naturally resistant to chane even when the logic for change is obvious.”
Steve Clarke said that most van users should know that the only way to achieve real savings on diesel and petrol is through discount fuel cards. Using the right fuel card typically means saving up to 3p – 4p per litre, week after week, on national average pump prices.
“The catch is that you have to use the right fuel card.” said Steve Clarke, “and they differ. One size does not fit all and the only way to ensure having the best possible deal is to compare everything on the market. If you have not compared all of the ‘Big Five’ – BP, Esso, Shell, Texaco and Total – and, if your vans use diesel, such specialist networks as Diesel Direct (Keyfuels) and UK Fuels, the only certainty is that you could be losing money.”
