Meachers Global Logistics has been awarded Customs Freight Simplified Procedures (CFSP) approval, following the testing of its software and processes by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

The CFSP customs declaration system was introduced to replace period entry and period warehousing. CFSP is an electronic process, which enables Meachers Global to clear imported goods via a simplified Entry, which is later finalised with a Supplementary Declaration. In most cases this will give the importer immediate clearance, enabling them to arrange faster deliveries.

Managing Director of Meachers Global’s International Division, Clive Broadley, said: “CFSP was created to help with the needs of the business community in the UK. It improves and simplifies Customs procedures for importers wanting to clear goods, either at port or out of warehouse.

“Under CFSP, the first Customs declaration is kept to a minimum with the remainder of the information required later in the Supplementary Declaration. This is in line with Customs’ aim to decrease the amount of paperwork previously required and nine times out of 10 immediate clearance will be granted.”

Following the initial clearance, goods are now able to move easily and quickly to either a Customs Warehouse or to a nominated facility. Providing conditions are met, HMR&C will authorize Local Clearance Procedure (LCP), which allows goods to be held in Temporary Storage. This approval enables them to remain at the premises without Duty and Vat being paid for up to 20 working days. After this period, goods must be entered to another Customs regime or cleared. Meachers Global is LCP approved.

This does not mean cargo can avoid preventative spot checks, for example drugs or anti smuggling. HMRC treat goods imported under CFSP in the same way as goods entering the UK under normal procedures. On arrival, Customs officers may check the goods for anti-smuggling, animal and pant health, and standard import prohibition and restriction control.

Broadley continued: “The advantages of CFSP are numerous. First and foremost CFSP gives improved control over Customs processing and accelerates clearance and release times. There can also be significant cash flow advantages as the final Entry declaration can be deferred for up to 20 days. The whole process leads to a more co-operative relationship with HM Revenue & Customs.”
