SSI Schaefer has developed extruded containers using the award-winning and highly regarded INTERCEPT® technology. Such technology allows users to protect goods against corrosion during transport, shipment and storage under extreme conditions and reduce process costs whilst reducing overall carbon footprint impact.
Corrosive gases such as salts, sulphur compounds, ozone and nitrogen cause susceptible stored goods to rust during long-term storage or overseas transport. To protect commercial items, goods are treated with complex processes such as oils, waxes or a vacuum to prevent contact between the corrosive atmosphere and the packaged goods. These protective substances must then be removed before being used or processed, which is not only time-consuming but very costly.
Chemical substances are frequently released into the atmosphere during this process, which has a big impact on both the environment and staff involved. Although such intensive protective measures are implemented at enormous cost, the annual damage figures continue to rise.
So what can be done to avoid these process chains, prevent negative impact on the environment and staff, and save costs?
The internationally patented INTERCEPT® technology was developed to protect virtually any material from all climatic conditions and environmental influences. INTERCEPT® products do not emit chemical gases; they can be recycled and meet all work safety requirements. SSI Schaefer has utilised this technology and anti-corrosion method for the first time in its manufacture of injection moulded containers.
The principle behind this combination is as simple as it is effective, and allows goods to be protected effectively against destructive corrosion, regardless of goods being transported and stored by sea, air or surface methods. The solution is a long-term application guaranteed up to 15 years with the added security of meeting legal requirements for product labelling.
The underlying environmentally-friendly technology consists of highly porous copper particles embedded into a polymer matrix which react with corrosive gases in the atmosphere neutralising them. This means that unlike traditional processes no artificial atmosphere is generated, even penetrating humidity is freed of corrosive elements, reducing the load in the atmosphere and ensuring better protection for employees, even with direct contact.
Parts no longer need to be preserved, for example, by oiling them, meaning that containers utilising the INTERCEPT® technology, designed specifically for multiple usage, in addition to proven effectiveness even in extreme usage and storage conditions, simplify the process and achieve considerable savings in terms of processing costs.
The containers are available in three different versions:
• Containers with corrosion protection provide long-term protection for components made from iron and non-ferrous metals, alloys, plastics and some organic materials; and no oils or secondary protective materials need to be used on the components. (It may be necessary to add a small quantity of drying agent.)
• Conductive ESD containers have improved abrasion properties in comparison with traditional containers with ESD protection without the addition of carbon-black.
• Containers with ESD and corrosion protection offer a unique combination of ESD properties plus long-term corrosion protection in moulded containers.
In addition to moulded containers, SSI Schaefer also supplies vacuum-formed inserts and fabricated inserts with INTERCEPT® technology in line with technical requirements for load carriers.
