symph_75.jpgA major cantilever racking installation providing 4500 linear metres of storage has been completed by Pro-Dek Storage Systems for the Symphony Group, one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of kitchen, bedroom and bathroom furniture. The racking has been installed in a new production facility in South Yorkshire, built to enable the company to meet demand for rigid kitchen furniture from private house-builders, the social housing sector and retail customers. It has been designed specifically to store an extensive range of work-top blanks and is located beside a machining area where they are cut and finished to customers’ specifications.

Racking columns are 10,500mm high and have nine or ten arm levels per side, depending on their position within the factory.  Column spacings have been designed to accommodate three and four metre work-tops, and arms are generally 1325mm long in order to store a variety of board depths.  Protective rubber pads on the columns between arms levels and radius-profiled arm ends minimise damage to boards during handling by fork trucks.

A heavy-duty rack-mounted guide rail system optimises operation of a multi-directional sideloader and reduces the risk of damage while minimising the aisle width, which has been maintained at 2800mm throughout the installation.  Provision for a sprinkler system has also been made throughout the racks, including pre-drilled holes for pipework and the installation of rubber stops at three arm levels to protect sprinkler heads.

The installation was built to schedule over a ten-week three-phase programme.
