A new pallet racking bulk store area and multi-level picking module with an integrated conveyor system has been installed by SSI Schaefer within the warehouse of the UK’s largest privately owned nursery supplier. Kiddicare, which stores around 6 million pounds worth of stock ready for dispatch from its 160,000 sq ft warehouse located in Peterborough, completes most of its business through the internet but also operates a large retail outlet in-front of the warehouse.
After an initial meeting at IMHX 2007, Kiddicare awarded Schaefer the contract to design a new stores area and a close working relationship followed to develop the final warehouse layout. One key advantage of using Schaefer was their ability to offer both storage and conveyor equipment from a single source, ensuring a high standard of installation and integration.
Project managed by the SSI Schaefer Systems Group, the new pallet racking bulk store consists of approximately 3500 double deep pallet positions while the picking module has a ground level plus three walkway levels that incorporates a unique, dynamic pick from pallet and unit storage system using a twin track combined with carton live storage picking.
The pallet pick area has a total of 300 picking locations capable of storing over 600 pallets while the carton live storage has 800 picking locations with a storage capacity of 2400 cartons.
The conveyor system, supplied by Schaefer Peem, is designed using lowerators, descending only lifts, to send picked items for packing and dispatch to either email customers or customer collection within the shop. Long span decked racking has also been supplied and installed within the dispatch area for returned goods.
Kiddicare is a family business established in 1974 and is now the largest privately owned nursery supplier to the public in the United Kingdom. They operate from the largest nursery showroom in Europe which features dedicated sales areas for key nursery brands, including Maxi Cosi, Britax and Silver Cross. The showroom also has 35 payment kiosks on the shopfloor to allow customer self service.
Kiddicare.com was launched in 1999 and now dispatches stock using a leading-edge, automated picking system from its distribution centre in Peterborough. Kiddicare employs over 120 full time members of staff.
