Lytx® is a leading provider of machine vision and AI-powered video telematics, analytics, safety and productivity solutions for commercial, services and public fleets. By harnessing the power of video, we help clients see what happened in the past, efficiently manage operations in the present and improve driver behaviour for the future.

What are your best-known products/solutions/services?

Lytx® is a leader in video telematics, a technology we pioneered more than 20 years ago. In the U.S we command over 60% of the market, and our business has grown rapidly in the U.K. over the last five years. Traditional telematics provides information to make fleets safer and more efficient, such as GPS tracking, fuel data and information about driving. What it can’t do is provide context for what has happened, which is where the Lytx Video Platform comes in.

Our best-known service in the U.K. is the Lytx Driver Safety Programme, but we can work with you to provide the solution that best fits your business, given the customisable nature of our solution. The Lytx Video Platform primarily offers information around collisions or near-collisions when the system is triggered by the technology’s G-force sensors. The Driver Safety Programme is proven to change driver behaviour by reducing unsafe driving before a collision occurs. The Fleet Telematics Service enables you to oversee fleet operations by locating, tracking and managing vehicles in real time. The video data captured by a Lytx DriveCam® Event Recorder is analysed by a combination of machine vision and artificial intelligence (MV+AI) to pinpoint risky behaviours. Our professional analysts review footage and offer an objective risk measurement methodology.

Which industry sectors are your customers in and which ones are growing fastest?

In the U.K., we are focusing on logistics, services and passenger transport fleets, with considerable growth in those sectors in recent years. In the U.S., we also work extensively with local authority customers, field services and construction companies.

What are your most recent product innovations?

Lytx’s Fleet Tracking Service and Driver Safety Programme are constantly being refined to offer the best possible experience for customers.

Our latest event recorder, the SF300, can record up to 100 hours of footage on multiple cameras around the vehicle, and our new, intuitive user interface (UI) puts all the data managers and coaches need at their fingertips, so there’s no scrolling through hours of footage or data.

Lytx machine vision and artificial intelligence-powered video telematics solutions are constantly increasing in sophistication in terms of identifying risky behaviours, such as drowsy driving and seatbelt non-compliance, without the need for G-force triggers like traditional telematics systems.

What are the major trends and developments affecting your category and your customers, and how are you responding?

Today we’re seeing busier roadways, increased distraction behind the wheel and rising insurance premiums. Lytx is there to provide clients support in all of these areas, while helping protect your drivers and bottom line.

In addition, a supplier’s lorry is a travelling billboard for the company, meaning every unsafe driving behaviour can reflect poorly on the company brand. While a commitment to safety is central to any fleet’s decision to sign with Lytx, fleets are continuing to recognise that a better understanding of their drivers’ behaviours is essential to maintaining a positive brand image.

Lytx solutions continue to be as versatile as possible by offering elements that an individual fleet can opt in or out of, and can fit all fleet types and sizes. In September, we held our first U.K. User Group Conference, where we asked our clients for feedback on key industry topics that we should all be focused on, so we can continue to develop our solutions based on customer-centered innovation.

Can you tell us about any recent customer contracts and how you helped the customer meet their challenges?

We recently announced results of our work with U.K.-based tour coach operator Alfa Travel. In February 2018, Alfa introduced the Lytx Driver Safety Programme, which captures 12-second clips from exterior- and interior-facing cameras when the system is triggered by G-forces. These are reviewed by Lytx experts and passed to Alfa’s traffic managers, who use the footage as learning tools to help drivers. The fleet has achieved impressive successes, including:

•Highway collisions – down from 0.99 per 100,000 km in 2017 to 0.53 in 2019

•Drivers distracted by mobiles – down 71%

•Failure to wear seat belt – down 84%

As Alfa Travel’s operations director Paul Bull sees it, “Lytx gives us a way to view and understand near misses. They help us know what has happened and build programmes to help prevent incidents and change driver behaviour.”

How does business in 2019 compare to previous years? What’s your strategy for succeeding in the current climate?

Video telematics adoption has significantly grown recently as companies recognise the dangers of busier roads, greater distractions and rising insurance premiums. Companies are increasingly looking for a provider like Lytx, which has the proven pedigree and innovative technologies to help them address these challenges.

What’s the latest news from your company?

With its unparalleled wealth of driving data, Lytx is able to uncover information about risky driving behaviour and risk on the roads. Most recently, we’ve issued news releases about the positive impact of the Lytx Driver Safety Programme on drowsy driving. Globally, we’ve seen a remarkable 39% reduction in drowsy driving events among Lytx clients from June 2018 to June 2019, and a 66% reduction in drivers falling asleep behind the wheel.

We also released new data around collisions occurring at very low speed. Lytx’s findings illuminated high rates of low-speed collisions, revealing 20% of recorded collisions and 12% of recorded near-collisions in commercial fleets occur at speeds below 5 mph.

Can you tell us about any areas where you’re currently making technical advances?

Our MV+AI is backed by billions of miles of professionally-reviewed data, which eliminates faulty trigger “noise”. Lytx leverages MV+AI and motion and engine control module sensors to present a superior view of risk, with 95% accuracy across more than 60 risky driving behaviours.

Are you investing in staff training and skills development?

Although our team has, on average, two-plus decades of experience in the telematics and transport industries, we are always looking to grow our expertise. We continually provide training for our team to hone existing strengths and gain new skills.

In particular, our training has been focusing on MV+AI and how we can leverage this new frontier of analytics to support our clients in every aspect of their fleet operations.

Are you taking part in any major trade shows? Can you tell us what you’ll be exhibiting there?

We exhibit at the CV show in Birmingham in the spring and at Coach & Bus UK and FleetLive in October. We use trade shows to connect with existing and potential customers, showing them the latest in Lytx technology. At the CV show earlier this year, there was considerable interest in our new UI, as well as enhanced version of our event recorder’s ability to record 100 hours of footage on multiple cameras around the vehicle.
