Leading European door manufacturer, Hörmann UK, is committed to sustainability and the company has recently implemented a number of green initiatives designed to significantly reduce the environmental impact of its manufacturing and packaging processes. These activities have resulted in the company achieving an impressive recycling rate of 98.7% and becoming ISO 50001:2018 certified.

The International Organisation for Standard, (ISO), outlines the monitoring, measurement, analysis and evaluation of energy management for businesses in its international standard, ISO 50001:2018. This provides requirements for a systematic, data-drive and facts-based process, focused on continuously improving energy performance. Hörmann UK has been officially recognised by the ISO for meeting these standards.

From procuring raw materials to production and transport logistics, the protection of the environment and natural resources plays an important role in every phase of Hörmann UK’s operations. For example, last year Hörmann UK made a commitment to significantly reduce its use of non-recyclable materials and in particular reduce the amount of polythene used by 70%. By increasing the amount of recyclable materials used the company has now been able to remove polythene entirely from its packaging processes, resulting in a reduction of more than 225,000 sqm of polythene, enough to fill approximately 180 Olympic size swimming pools. Hörmann UK now also boasts an exceptional recycling rate of 98.7% for all materials used throughout its manufacturing process.

Additionally, and in a bid to become more sustainable from an energy perspective, Hörmann UK has installed solar panels at its headquarters in Coalville, Leicestershire, to reduce its use of electricity and subsequently lower carbon emissions.

Paul Tomlin, Operations Manager at Hörmann UK, said: “Over the last couple of years we have made significant strides towards becoming a more sustainable business and we have achieved some very impressive and tangible results to demonstrate this commitment. As a result of our green initiatives we have also recently been awarded ISO 50001:2018 certification, a great achievement for our company and staff who have thoroughly embraced and supported our green agenda.

“Moving forwards we will undertake annual reviews and audits to reassess our aims and objectives, as well as ensuring we meet the previous sustainability goals that we set out to achieve. Since 2010 we have been committed to reducing energy wastage throughout our headquarters and we have invested in a number of different renewable energy sources, including solar panels. Moving forwards, we are going to update all of our heating and air conditioning units across all sites, which will help us to continue to reduce our company’s carbon emission outputs even further in the future.”

For the warehousing and logistics sector, partnering with green minded companies such as Hörmann UK will go a long way towards making the supply chain as a whole more sustainable. By working with companies that are committed to minimising waste and optimising environmental standards, the sector can continue to make important and significant strides towards reducing its overall environmental effect and carbon footprint.

The design and manufacture of Hörmann UK’s diverse portfolio is regularly reviewed and updated to not only improve the quality of each product, but also provide the highest standards in sustainability and safety.
