Many companies would benefit from additional loading bay space to increase warehouse efficiency, but do not move forward with a solution due to challenges such as maneuvering HGV’s and keeping sensitive goods sufficiently protected. However, a bespoke approach can overcome these hurdles and deliver an effective result.

The logistics giant Eddie Stobart required an additional loading door to meet their customers delivery commitments, but its proposed location threw up many challenges for a suitable covered loading bay. CopriSystems, a market leader in bespoke loading bay and storage structures, took on the project as principal contractor, designing and installing a sufficient new concrete slab, creating a new emergency access route and an opening in the existing warehouse for an electric roller shutter door with interlocked traffic lights with an existing door to prevent accidents. CopriSystems’ bespoke side-wall mounted monopitch canopy then created a dry environment to enable loading and unloading in all conditions.

Johnson Matthey’s Process Technology Division based in Clitheroe Lancashire, has acquired a purpose built canopy for use as a combined storage and loading facility for finished product. Their considerations included the need for security, keeping the product dry and the facility to enter into a rental lease agreement with beneficial terms over a five year period.

A well thought out bespoke loading bay can be designed to individual business needs and provide not only additional space but also help protect sensitive goods.

CopriSystems also designed and installed a bespoke ‘T’ shaped canopy for online grocer Ocado, allowing vans to be loaded and left undercover, plugged into mains electricity, until ready to deliver. This freed up space in the main warehouse for new goods coming in. A bespoke structure sounds like a more expensive option but as shown with Ocado, if properly thought through and aligned with the needs of the business, can deliver real efficiencies and a lower net total cost of ownership.

Combine this approach with finance options such as those offered by CopriSystems and there’s a real opportunity to transform this key area within budget, making it ready to meet today’s and tomorrow’s online demand for goods.
