From smartphones, GPS and dash cams to tablets, rugged systems, PDA’s and more; with the ability to connect any device to any surface utilising a vast product range of over 3000 components, with a lifetime warranty included; RAM mounts are the logical choice. Rob Earley, Design & Marketing, RAM Mount UK Ltd, speaks to Warehouse and Logistics News.

What are your best-known products and services?

Our stand out product in almost every industry is definitely the X-Grip universal phone mount. It’s a unique spring-loaded phone mount like no other that can hold any device with or without a skin / large protective case. As it can hold any phone, combined with our lifetime warranty it truly is a mount for life – you’ll never have to get another mount and it can be used in or on every vehicle in any application. We’re also very well known for our custom GPS mounts in the car, fleet and motorcycle markets where RAM Mounts are supplied in the box for the TomTom Rider and the Garmin Zumo.

Which market sectors and countries are your customers in?

RAM as a brand operate all over the world with multiple distributors on every continent, so as a UK distributor we handle everything within the UK and Ireland. We operate in every sector you can imagine – any projects where mounts are needed for electronics. Our biggest customers reside in the fleet market, from defense and logistics to the emergency services and warehousing sectors.

Which ones are growing fastest?

As mobile devices become more affordable, lighter and more powerful – whether it be action cameras, tablets, phones or something else – every sector seems to be increasing their demand for and use of a variety of electronics year on year. As technology becomes more central to life and streamlined within our occupations, we’re seeing huge developments by decision makers with their understanding for the necessity of using high quality adjustable and interchangeable mounting systems to protect their increasing investments in mobile devices.

Who are your major customers and what do you do for them?

We currently have large projects providing our IntelliSkin, docking and mounting products to the logistics sector and also projects for the emergency services providing solutions for transferable body worn video cameras to be used in-vehicle. We have also supplied our X-Grip mounts on our Tough-Claw base for in-flight purchases with several major airlines. On public transport our mounts are used with contactless payment systems and one other notable project for RAM has been to provide 300+ heavy duty ball mounts for use on the Royal Navy QE-Class aircraft carrier.

How do your products benefit your customers’ businesses?

When using a mobile device in or on a vehicle, they’re essentially useless handsfree without a mount. Considering this, when a client understands the necessity it then comes down to function, price and longevity. Functionally, no other system is as malleable as RAM – for example, with interchangeable components you can swap out the holder or base to enable the mount to hold any device and to attach to any surface without having to buy a whole new system for each device. With regard to price, you really do get what you pay for. If you’re mounting a £3-5k rugged tablet in a demanding environment, an £80-£150 mount to ensure its safety ties is nicely with its longevity as our mounts come with a lifetime warranty.

Why should customers choose you as their main supplier in your area?

The RAM brand speaks for itself. Having worked extensively within the marketing and sales structure of the company for 8 years, during every major project or marketing campaign we’ve completed our customers have always acknowledged that our products are the best in the industry. We have our rivals and copycats even here in the UK, but much like how Apple’s competitors go as far as to shamelessly copy the notch on the iPhone X/Xs and other aesthetics of their flagship devices, imitation only enhances our reputation and reinforces our design decisions going forward.

What’s business been like in the past year? How have conditions changed over this period and how have you reacted?

Business has continued to be incredible. As mentioned, a combination of an increase in sales from new and existing customers and our increasing marketing and brand awareness efforts, we’re seeing a huge return on investment.

As usual we’re currently investing heavily into our 2019 trade show calendar with more elaborate presentation and an increase in investment for social media and in-house production.

What were the business highlights for you in the last 12 months?

Securing and developing projects within industries that have very strict rules and high standards such the emergency services sector and alongside major brands like Samsung. It’s great to have success and rivals in the B2C sector, but what separates us from the rest is our involvement in large B2B projects where the bar is set very high with regard to specific requirements, performance and supply quantity.

How have you fine-tuned your offering in the last 12 months and why?

2018 has been more about refining our current best sellers than designing lots of new products. From packaging, brand awareness, in-house media, trade shows and more, 2019 is set to be our biggest year yet.

What new products have you brought out?

One of our biggest releases that we’re continuing to focus on is the IntelliSkin case and docking systems. This is a separate product line under the RAM umbrella that focuses on smartphone and tablet protection (IntelliSkin) with in-built charging pins molded into each skin. These pins connect seamlessly to our docking systems and can be fitted in-vehicle, onto a forklift, in the warehouse, home or office.

What factors do you see affecting your business in the coming year? How will you turn these into opportunities?

As usual we’re often swatting imitation attempts both in the UK and in places like China. Our UK competitors try to either match our products functionality through alternative mechanics or try to copy our ball and socket design all together.

Unfortunately for them, the specific patents we hold in our molding and design process enable our products to remain superior. Even with exact copies coming from Asia – although they may look similar, the materials used in design and their production methods are always inferior. We turn these problems into opportunities by bringing awareness to these imitations and then use them to demonstrate how desirable our system really is in that other companies are so desperate to imitate us, yet still manage to remain so far behind.

Are you planning to branch into any new areas, target new customers and take on more people?

At the moment we’re very focused on several key markets and we’re making great progress integrating the RAM system into even more industries than we ever thought possible. We’re always open to new collaborations and tend to dive head first into pursuing new and inventive uses for our products.

Are you investing in new premises and extra staff? What about staff development and training?

For the time being our premises is serving us well, but we’ve doubled the size of our team over the past few years. Christmas work do’s have gone from being a few blokes in a bar awkwardly keeping their eyes on the tab to a room full of diverse and unique individuals in multiple departments celebrating our continued success. We’re currently aiming to increase our admin and sales team even more in early 2019.

Are you involved in any major trade shows or other industry events over the next year?

We are indeed. We’re still confirming our schedule for 2019 but to name a few we’re attending the LAMMA agricultural exhibition, the Commercial Vehicle show and the DSEi defense event.

What big news from Ram Mounts can our readers look forward to seeing in Warehouse & Logistics News in 2019?

The IntelliSkin is still our broadest innovation and we’re thrilled that many users have now fully embraced the concept. From delivery and forklift drivers to warehouse managers and end users, our IntelliSkin products and docking unit sales have increased dramatically throughout 2018.

And finally, if you had to sum up your company in a tweet what would it be?

World leaders in truly rugged, interchangeable mounting solutions that enable users to mount any device in any location to enhance the user experience.
