Visitors to the Greenport Congress from 16-19 October 2018 received an exclusive look at the Hyster® zero emissions laden container handler currently in development.

Prior to the event, the zeroemissions truck, which will be powered by a Nuvera® fuel cell combined with a lithium-ion battery, has only been shown in diagrams and 3D renderings.

However, during the presentation “Alternative energy sources for mobile plant equipment” at the Greenport Congress, Willem Nieuwland, Project Leader for Hyster Europe, revealed the first photograph and movie of the first drive of the model in development.

The innovative electric truck, which is being developed for an end-user at the Port of Los Angeles, is expected to utilise fully integrated wireless fast charging to meet the needs of the application. It is also expected to benefit from patented Hyster® energy recovery systems which aim to increase uptime and profitability for port applications while also helping to reduce energy costs for charging.

The development of the truck follows the receipt of a grant from California Air Resources Board (CARB) to support the development of a zero-emissions container handling truck powered by a Nuvera® fuel cell.

The funding is from California Climate Investments (CCI), the state of California’s climate changefighting program that puts billions of dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy and improving public health.
