Smart-Space, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and installers of re-locatable, semi-permanent and permanent buildings, has completed the construction of a finished goods warehouse for Northwood Hygiene Products at the company’s production site in Telford, Shropshire.

Northwood manufactures, supplies and transports away-from-home (AfH) professional paper hygiene products to a distribution network spanning the UK, Ireland and Europe, which in turn services markets including healthcare, hospitality, hotels, engineering, janitorial, catering and education.

The new building is a relocatable 20-metre by 75- metre by 5.2 metre structure, with composite walls and an insulated thermo roof, two fast action roller doors and four single personnel doors.

The building provides Northwood with around 1,500 pallet spaces, which will be used to help accommodate the significant growth in the company’s business.

“We have used this type of building before, but this is the first time we have found a supplier who could provide us with a comprehensive service package in addition to the design and build. This included taking on many of the important regulatory responsibilities as principal contractor,” says Northwood supply chain director Wendy Clay.

“The project was completed ahead of schedule in three weeks and we are delighted both with the facility and with Smart- Space’s efficiency, quality of service and professionalism.”

Smart-Space managing director Antony Hunt reports that regulatory compliance is entering more conversations with potential customers.

“We were the only bidder to address the legalities surrounding the project, to highlight the customer’s responsibilities in terms of CDM2015 regulations and to alleviate many of those obligations,” he says. “The fact that we have a comprehensive in-house operation, manufacture in the UK and don’t subcontract installations means we are happy to take on the principal contractor and designer roles for projects.

“It provides significant benefits for the customer as it reduces their regulatory workload and removes their vulnerability to projectrelated health and safety issues.”
