Etex Building Performance Ltd has installed Carbon8 Lighting’s Discus Gen2 luminaires in the production facility & warehouse at the company’s largest manufacturing plant in Portbury, Bristol, with the aim of reducing energy consumption and increasing sustainability, whilst providing a well-lit working environment. Lighting accounts for a significant proportion of site energy costs so the factory presented the perfect opportunity for Carbon8 to install its new Discus Gen2 LED high bay to support the achievement Etex Building Performance environmental goals.

Etex Building Performance Ltd manufactures drywall products and systems for partitions, ceilings, wall linings and external sheathing purposes, with customers ranging from small builders through to some of the most acclaimed architects and construction companies in the country. Part of the global Etex Group of companies, Etex Building Performance Ltd was formerly known as Lafarge Plasterboard until it was acquired by the Etex group, which in the UK includes the Marley Eternit and Promat brands, at the end of 2011 and began trading as Etex Building Performance Ltd in October 2012. The company is committed to providing innovative, flexible solutions that help customers to compete in their chosen markets with confidence.

Specified by BIS Group, Carbon8’s Discus Gen2 LED high bay luminaires were the ideal solution to replace the existing 400W SON lighting on a like for like basis in the production facility & warehouse.

Etex Building Performance Ltd had previously installed and tested 150W Generation 1 fittings over a two year period replacing 400W fittings on failure. Once the larger project for 500 fittings came live the project had to go out to tender and Carbon8 worked closely with BIS to complete the tender. However, at this point Discus Gen2 had been launched, enabling further energy reductions with the same light output using 120W Discus Gen2. The figures are impressive, with annual running cost savings of £137,371.85 and CO2 savings of 1,814,404.30Kg achieved. An evolution of Carbon8 Lighting’s highly successful Discus LED High Bay, Discus Gen2 is a robust and reliable IP65 rated light fitting that operates in the harshest of environments and provides unparalleled performance in excess of 160 lumens per watt, offering unrivalled value for money and impressive return on investment figures. The high output module used within the Discus Gen2 offers complete stability in a wide range of temperatures, whilst maintaining consistent light output throughout the life of the fitting. The Discus Gen2 is powered using the Meanwell ELG Series driver. Features of this driver include surge protection, temperature safety shut down and extremely low power factor to ensure excellent performance and reliability.

Options include colour temperature, diffuser lens, sensor control, emergency and dimmable, which have all been designed to suit individual needs and provide complete flexibility. Discus is offered as standard with 5000K colour temperature to suit most applications but can also be offered with warmer or cooler colour temperatures.

“The plant is on an ambitious program of change focused on reliability, cost saving and improving the environment for the staff,” said Richard Hildersley, Energy Manager.

“The lighting reflects the vision of a modern, professional and innovative plant – and places quality at the heart of the operation. The Bristol plant is Etex’s biggest manufacturing facility and important that we make it a place where employees are proud to work, and where customers feel welcome to see the production line for themselves” added Richard.
