Union Industries has installed a pair of specially-designed Bulldoors™ in a hazardous area at flavouring manufacturer Frutarom UK LTD.

As a repeat customer of Union Industries, first purchasing industrial doors in 2010, Frutarom’s Hartlepool-based Fine Ingredients division required additional Bulldoors™ to prevent the ingress of birds and pests, whilst factoring in the company’s hazardous, zoned areas.

Union Industries specified two of its bestselling Bulldoors™ with ATEX-rated components, to comply with strict industry requirements for electrical systems in explosive environments.

Leeds-based Union Industries, which designs, manufactures, installs and maintains its own range of high-speed industrial doors, has installed numerous EX-rated doors for various customers over the years including AstraZeneca, PPG Industries, Dow Corning and CalaChem.

In order to be able to offer these specialised doors, the company has trained its Design, Installation, Maintenance and Inspection engineers to the ExF and Ex01 to Ex06 levels at a CompEx verified training centre, with one Union Design Engineer also completing Ex12a & Ex12b for the design of non-intrinsically and instrinsically safe equipment in explosive environments.

Union’s Technical Sales Engineers use relevant hazardous zone information from customers, liaising with its in-house EXcertified electrical engineers to put together a bespoke specification to suit each company’s individual requirements.

Union worked closely with Frutarom’s engineers throughout the process to continually modify and enhance the doors prior to installation, and to ensure they met the company’s requirements whilst meeting strict ATEX standards.

As Union’s best-selling door, the Bulldoor™ is a fast action roller door which has as standard a ‘Crash-Out & Auto-Reset’ feature included to reduce bottom beam damage and keep ‘downtime’ to a minimum.

Frutarom is a chemical manufacturer that creates and produces a variety of high quality flavours and ingredients for blue chip companies and to customers in the food, beverage, fragrance, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

Alan Hirst, Sales Director at Union Industries said, “We take the business of installing doors in hazardous areas extremely seriously so we’ve developed a rigid procedure to ensure that every standard is met. This, combined with the quality of our high-speed roller doors, is why we’re the go-to company for businesses needing ATEX-rated high speed door solutions in zoned areas.”

Greg Nuttall, Engineering Manager at Frutarom added, “It’s essential for Frutarom to secure industrial doors that help maintain food safety standards whilst, most importantly, ensuring the safety of our employees.

“We’ve now had six doors installed by Union Industries and they have continued to be of a high quality and the most cost-effective solution. During the quotation stage, Union has adopted a completely collaborative process, which shows that they listen to what the customer wants.”
