JAMIE CASH, OPERATIONS MANAGER, CENTURY LOGISTICS LTD

Jamie Cash began his career with Century Logistics in April 2015 when he joined the company as a warehouse contract manager.

By the end of that year, Jamie had been appointed manager of a satellite site. He quickly developed the position and impressed his colleagues by providing solutions that not only improved the service to Century’s customers, but also reduce operational costs.

At the end of 2016, a more senior operations manager role became available within Century’s largest facility and Jamie applied. As the recruitment process was commencing, the general manager resigned and Jamie was offered the position on an interim basis. He was appointed on a permanent basis in February of this year. In no time at all, Jamie stepped into his new role and has made significant improvements to the running of the warehouse operation.

He has significantly improved inbound processes and overall stock accuracy to deliver a step-change in service to Century’s client. Jamie has a team of 17 staff, made up of a small administrative team and a warehouse team over two shifts, including 3 supervisors.

Stephen Basey-Fisher, managing director of Century Logistics, commented: “Jamie takes a very structured approach to his work, always looking for new and better ways to improve processes and support his team. He is developing an excellent relationship with our customers who have been very positive about his achievements to date. On top of all this, Jamie is a very pleasant young man, highly thought of by his team, our customers and the management team of Century.”

JENNA GRACIE, TRANSPORT PLANNING SUPERVISOR, MAXIM LOGISTICS GROUP LTD

With no prior knowledge of the industry, Jenna Gracie joined Maxim Logistics in April 2013 as a Customer Services Administrator.

Within two weeks she was already at an equivalent standard to the previous person who did the role and after a month she was asking for additional work, so Jenna was enrolled on a ‘Traffic Office’ Advanced Apprenticeship, which she completed with consistently excellent assessment results.

In addition to her role Customer Service role Jenna started to show an interest in the transport planning and was able to assist with both driver and customer queries relating to deliveries.

When the opportunity arose to become a Transport Planner, Jenna applied and was successful and in a short period of time was planning half of the daily traffic and within six months could do all of the planning functions.

In December 2016, Jenna was moved into a supervisory position managing Job Input, Booking and Transport Planning roles.

She quickly began to influence the performance of her team’s KPI results in her supervisory role: for example the £ per mile earned has been increased by 6.5% because Jenna used the statistical data distributed by Maxim’s accounts department to motivate the traffic team to reduce unnecessary empty miles.

Maxim’s managing director, Andy Lawrence, is fulsome in his praise of Jenna: “Jenna’s progress has been incredible. She has a natural aptitude for logistics and shows an amazing ability to deal with multiple demands on her time seamlessly. It is testament to her management capabilities that she has been able to guide and mentor her successors so well in their new roles. She has an amazing future in front of her.”

TAYLOR ATKINSON, LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY CHAIN CONSULTANT, HATMILL LTD

Taylor Atkinson has worked for just over a year at Hatmill as a Logistics and Supply Chain Consultant. This is her first role in consultancy.

Taylor has worked on five diverse client projects during this time and has been highly successful in each of them.

For example, in her initial project, she fulfilled a first-class role in warehouse process mapping and recommendations creation, leading to over £1.5m of projected savings. She worked with intelligence and tact in a sometimes difficult working environment and demonstrated clarity and confidence with her proposals. Such was the team’s confidence in Taylor’s ability she was then assigned to a solo project assignment looking at the processes of a second business.

Taylor’s most recent role has been supporting a UK logistics strategy, defining the optimum number, location and configuration of warehouses. This was made complicated by the fact that there are 6 different brands, 6 existing storage locations, and 3 major factories. This was Taylor’s first full logistics strategy activity but she quickly picked up the objectives, the approach and the means of analysis. She was responsible for much of the fact finding on her own initiative and undertook a major part of the analysis to explore different warehouse configuration options and identify the lowest cost/highest service.

According to her colleagues, Taylor “has a relentless attitude towards fact finding and will not rest until she has what she considers the optimum level of information.”

On top of her client facing activities Taylor has written case studies for all of Hatmill’s key projects and led the redesign and relaunch of the company’s website.
